My Comet rice cooker is approximately 40 years old. I use it fairly frequently -- the last time was two days ago.

I'm not sure that's the oldest thing in it, though.

My favorite rice cooker is a stovetop Comet brand rice cooker like in the picture. You could buy it by mail from Comet for less than a dollar back in the day.

I've seen similar steamers for sale that claim that they can do rice, but they invariably have plenty of holes for the steam to rise in the middle of the upper pot. How the hell does one steam rice in such a contraption?

My rice cooker was free, except for a box of comet rice (for the boxtop) and postage and handling.

My favorite rice cooker was free other than the cost of a postage stamp and something like 75 cents for handling. I just had to cut out the coupon from the back of a box of Comet Rice and mail it in and the cooker arrived in the mail about a month later.

My best results are in a Comet steamer (see pic).

That said, I use an electric rice steamer more often and it usually turns out good.

The last time I made a big mistake. I buy rice in 20 to 25 pound bags and keep it in the freezer. I usually have a bag of basmati rice and a bag of jasmine rice. The bags were originally in burlap, but are now just the inner, unmarked plastic bag.

So the other night I grabbed a bag of basmati without looking while thinking about jasmine rice. I put two cups of rice in the electric rice steamer and three cups of water, turned it on, and went to watch tv. Later when I came back, it was immediately obvious what I had done. 1.5 cups of water per cup of rice is good for jasmine rice, but basmati rice needs 2 cups of water per cup of rice or maybe a big more.

I tried to correct it after the fact by adding more water, but it didn't come out very good.

I use either a stovetop Comet rice steamer or an electric rice cooker most of the time.

Get a stovetop rice steamer.

I rarely use my rice cooker. My old rice steamer produces better rice.

I get my best rice from a cheap rice steamer that came from a coupon on a package of Comet brand rice.

Similar to the one in the picture.

I use a rice steamer (identical to the one in the photo). With minimum attention, the rice comes out perfectly every time.

Most people say not to open it. On the rare times I cook it in a pot, I may open it momentarily toward the end to check it.

Usually I just use a stovetop rice steamer instead. I usually get better rice out of a really cheap stovetop rice steamer than I ever got out of an electric rice steamer.

Unless you need to make huge amounts of rice, find a stove top rice steamer instead. I have both types of rice cooker and use the stove top steamer most of the time because the results are so much better.

My best rice is made with a steamer like this.

Get a decent rice steamer and learn to use it. My rice is nearly always pretty close to perfect without putting much effort into it at all.

Pictured: the kind of rice steamer I'm talking about. I also have one of the more common electric rice cookers but the rice from it is not as good as from my steamer.

I have a fancy rice cooker, but it doesn't cook rice as well as a simple stovetop rice steamer.

I grant that the fancy rice cooker is more consistent, but the consistency is not as good as the steamer.

My rice cooker that I prefer is a stove top steamer from Comet Rice just like the one in the picture.

I've tried it for steaming vegetables but never really spent enough time to get it right.

I have another rice cooker that is also a vegetable steamer -- just use a different basket. I like it better for vegetables than for rice.

I have a rice cooker and it does make decent rice.

But my best rice is made with a rice steamer just like the one in the picture.

Not only does it make great rice with minimal effort, it was free except for the postage and handling.

The major advantage to the style in your picture is that you can cook relatively large amounts of rice in it.

I have several rice cookers. My favorite is the style of steamer shown in my picture here with a lower portion in which to put water to bring to a low boil, an upper part in which to put the rice and water, and the lid. This style consistently produces, at least for me, markedly better results than the automatic type in your picture.

You can cook it without sticking, but it does take practice.

My preference is a good rice steamer. The one I bought from Comet was the least expensive I've seen and works very well.
