I had mediocre, bitter commercial coffee all my life, always drank with sugar or sugar + milk.
One day I went to a local cafe/roaster and had a cup of well-extracted Kenia coffee that tasted closer to fruit juice than what I had come to know as coffee.

Haven't had sugar in coffee or espresso since, only in milk-coffee desserts like Capucchino or Frappe, which I don't drink regularly.
tldr. try some high-quality 'exotic' coffee and you probably won't want sugar anymore.
