so, /ck/, how much difference does a whetstone or two make in the kitchen? enough to justify for a casual cook?

Hey /ck/, I'm in the market for two whetstones, a medium grit (800-1000) and fine grit (3000-6000), because I feel using the hand-cranked horseshoe/hoof grindstone in the garage isn't doing my knives any good.

They hold up for a good month, but then it's back to the grind, literally.

Now I've had a look at GLOBAL's, but you have to buy their products physically from registered outlets, none of which are close to me, and their prices are...well, pricey.

Before I go charging off to Amazon or eBay or some other online retailer, has anyone bought a few whetstones online from a reliable source and been happy/overjoyed with them so far?
Any brands to avoid?
