Am I doing something wrong, or is it virtually impossible to get a consistent brew with this thing?

Granted, it's never terrible, but it is only sometimes excellent, when I can't see what I am doing differently between each brew. I fill right below the valve with hot water each time, level off the grinds at the top, heat it on the same low burner, turning off the heat and running the base under cold water before it starts to gurgle. But I'll get dramatically different results almost every time and I have no idea why.

Here's my fake moka pot latte method
>Preheat cup of water in microwave
>Grind beans just above fine
>Use the preheated water to brew as normal
>Microwave half cup of milk for 2 minutes
>Whisk the heated milk in the cup until foamy
>Pour in the coffee

I've been drinking the coffee from the Flavia machine at work (it's supposedly horrid coffee, but I kind of like the taste) and want to start making my own coffee on the weekends. Recommend me a coffee starter pack please!

Should I get a drip pot, aeropress, moka pot, Chemex, or some other crazy contraption?

Should I get a grinder and grind my own beans?

Any recommended starter coffees?
