When you wash rice, this is what you're removing. It's a common misconception that the purpose of washing rice is to rinse out foreign contaminants, but done properly it's a vigorous scrubbing action that removes a final layer from the grains. For over a decade, "no wash" rice has been available in Japan, polished without water using a rolling process. Pic related is the byproduct.
Only applies to certain kinds of rice of course.
