Well, if you're talking about making the most out of what you're buying, keep your cuttings. You know, when you cut ends off your carrots or celery and toss it, or the ends of your onions (minus the skin) or any other veg in the fridge that's starting to turn...

Keep it all in a bag in the freezer. Once the bag fills, dump it in a big pot with enough water. Bring to a boil, cover and simmer a couple of hours, THEN toss the veg (or compost) and you have a pot of vegetable stock.

Use it when making rice, or pasta, or basically anything you would cook with water.
