How about an ipe countertop? See picture.

For those who aren't familiar with ipe, it is supposedly the hardest wood in the world. I've heard that they can't even hammer nails into it, but have to drill holds and bolt it with special bits.

Some years ago, there was a fire along a boardwalk that had the usual woods but with ipe in places. While the usual woods were destroyed, I understand that the ipe was hardly damaged at all -- maybe a few scorch marks.
