The flip side is that once you got past the mainstream, niche cultures existed, but were INCREDIBLY more insular without online communities. I do understand your point that it was important to have more cohesion/intersection between culture and physical/local communities. That's a loss. I would further add that the spread of online communities is responsible for harmful and mentally ill ideologies gaining undue prominence, due to an illusion of greater representation and thus "support". But if you were somewhere in the middle, just a little weird, a little outside the mainstream without being toxic, then the virtual world was indeed the boon that was promised.
