his doing his job / out of respect. some customers don't like small talk at all, mainly older men. but if he said that and you thought "well I would talk, but I'm not good at talking" why not just say that? Instead, you stayed silent, and regretted it later.

Fear is the biggest weakness people have. Regret is also the worst. I'm 28 years old, never go outside my room, and have aspergers and have no friends or anything. I understand it being hard to talk to people, but on the other hand, you want those people to understand you're not just a weird silent person who hates to talk... you want to talk to people but they don't realize it.
