If anything, american ice cream has less calories than normal ice cream. Half the shit on the shelves from the major brands are low fat or "slow churned". Another common thing is for the ice cream to be made using water or to have air introduced into it to reduce calories per serving and/or make for a lighter texture.

I'm pretty sure a normal ice cream or gelato made with just cream, whole milk, sugar, and flavoring minimally processed would be more calorie dense than most of the stuff on American supermarket shelves.
