I've just started my 5th month working in a grocery store deli, and even though we are a lower density/ lower traffic location, it seems that 75% of the total amount of customers which walk through the entrance at the very least stop by to browse our display, or more likely to be waited on. There are times where I just feel so overwhelmed because I have a backlog of 3 customers who are staring me down as I rush to finish with the current customer without feeling pushy or disrespectful. There is a surprising amount of stress despite it being a repetitive, low skill job which can be done in air conditioning.
The few points your made about your time working in the deli resonated with me to a suspicious degree; for one, you mention working with older women, which I do as well. Out of the 4 female coworkers I have, 3 of them are over the age of 45, the oldest teetering on 60. The manager is a middle aged Jamaican woman, and she is exactly how you may imagine- very unpleasant, surveilling, quick to comment on what your doing wrong, awfully keen on trying to find something to snap at, just the type of person you can't be to sure around because of their bi-polar temperament.
Also, there is a resident " weird guy", but I assume he isn't there as proof of wasted potential, but because he may have mental issues and a severe lack of confidence.
More often than not, I find myself peering over to produce, which is across the pond to the deli counter, and I always take note of how loose the workers are, how comfortable they seem. I get envious, I'll confess. They don't have a bitch managers huffing over everything, they don't need to provide rapid fire customer service, they are allowed time to escape to the back of the store and go about work without interacting with people. All of them look so cheery and familial. I tell myself that I'm the one being built up with experience and a tolerance for pressure because I remain here, frustrated and longing.
