Boston used to be famous for its molasses. Not that it was ever produced in NE but it was imported, refined, and distributed all over the US and abroad from Boston. Finest molasses you could get for decades. This is why Boston Baked Beans are still famous even though literally nobody has eaten that nor does it exist on any menu.

Anyway, over 100 years ago one of the gigantic molasses reservoirs in the North End ruptured and destroyed entire city blocks with a shockwave of molasses. Dozens of people were killed, and just like that, the Boston molasses trade was dead forever. On hot summer days the pavestones and cellars around the North End still smell like molasses.

The point is, this could happen to YOUR town but with hot sauce.
