>Does it taste like soap to anyone else here?

Me. Somehow, I had never tasted cilantro until about 10 years ago, (I'm 56 now) when my buddy and I stopped by a new Mexican restaurant, where I got a wet burrito. I took my first bite and was overwhelmed by the taste of soap. I thought maybe the plate hadn't be throughly rinsed after washing and looked/felt underneath to see if that was the case and my buddy asked WTF was going on and I told him. He looked at the menu as saw cilantro was listed as an ingredient and said I must have the "soap gene".

I choked down the burrito (wasn't the restaurant's fault) and since then, I always carefully the menu to see if cilantro is included.

>i never knew what was happening when i just randomly tasted and smelled soap

Same thing happened to me and I agree with OP about cilantro warnings.

A few years back, my buddy and I stopped by a new Mexican restaurant (owned by Arabs and staffed by Blacks, but whatever) and I ordered a wet burrito.

When it arrived, I happily dug in and was dismayed by an overwhelming taste of soap!

My buddy saw the look on my face and asked me what I was doing as I felt around under the plate for soapy water, thinking it had come out of the dishwasher without being rinsed and when I told him my burrito tasted like soap, he said I had the “soapy cilantro” gene that made cilantro taste like soap to me.

I choked down the burrito as the description on menu did say cilantro so I guess it was kinda my fault but I’ve never been back since.

Cilantro tastes exactly like soap to me.

Several years back a new Mexican restaurant opened nearby (owned by Arabs and staffed by Blacks…) and my buddy and I stopped in to try it out and I ordered wet burrito but when I took the first bite, it tasted literally like dish soap.

I picked up the plate and looked/felt around underneath, figuring someone hadn’t rinsed it after washing but it looked fine and when I told my buddy, he said I must have the “cilantro gene” that causes it to taste like soap to some people and when I reread the menu, sure enough cilantro was listed.

I still choked down the burrito, as it wasn’t the restaurant’s fault but now I carefully check the menu when ordering anything to see if it includes cilantro.

> For instance, the first time I tried Cilantro, I was disgusted by it. It tasted like soap

Same here. A few years back, a buddy and I tried out a new Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood (owned by Arabs and staffed with Blacks…) and I got a wet burrito but when I took a bite, it tasted like fucking soap. I was actually looking/feeling around under the plate thinking it hadn’t been properly rinsed after washing, when my buddy pointed out that I probably had the “cilantro tastes like soap” gene.

> Never happened again though, and I actually love the stuff now.

Again, same here. Just this year (before the covid thing hit) I got a personal Hawaiian pizza at a local bar/restaurant while hanging out with friends and didn’t notice on the menu that cilantro was one of the ingredients but when I took a bite, I didn’t get the “tastes like soap” effect (in fact, it didn’t taste like anything).

But my buddy who I mentioned above (and now his wife) used to eat bread all the time, until the Internet convinced him that he had celiac disease and now he won’t touch it.

Never had cilantro until a few years back when a buddy and I went to a new Mexican joint (run by Arabs and staffed by Blacks…) and I ordered a wet burrito but when I took a bite, it tasted like fucking soap?!

I picked up the plate and was looking at it for soap bubbles for when my buddy ask WTF I was doing and said the plate must have not been rinsed off after washing, because this burrito taste like fucking soap, at which point he said it must be the cilantro and that I’m one of those people for whom cilantro tastes like soap.

I choked down the burrito (wasn’t the restaurant’s fault after all) but I never went back there again.
