Modular, adaptable, and expandable designs instead of being boxed in and restricted by a gimmicky roof. If you find one of the old style buildings, they've usually become cramped claustrophobic messes due to renovations.

Ironically, part of the official explanation is that the modern designs are actually less blocky in design than their predecessors. Over the years, the company had a lot of problems with their classic store designs being difficult to renovate or redesign. When prime McDonalds locations were found to last decades, they started to find a lot of problems as the stores couldn't be upgraded to match increased demand.

McDonalds corporate basically acknowledged the flaw of their original iconic buildings in that it created a very "boxed in" design that stymied growth or redevelopment over the years, as many locations would last decades. The newer design, while ironically more "box"-looking, was meant to be modular, expandable, futureproof, and all other sorts of business buzzwords.

Funny enough, the modern designs are actually less boxy to compensate for the fact that restaurants nowadays need to constantly consider the ability to expand and otherwise adapt to the changing business trends.

A couple years back, McDonalds corporate did a big press release about how they found out the boxed-in store designs were shit for logistics and they were going to make a return back to the older free-form style. The OP's promotional art is just a reactionary test on "DUDE, WHAT IF WE CUT OUT ALL THE DINE-IN?" pandering the the meme virus crowd as well as restaurant managers looking to cut cleaning costs.

It's just promotional crap. They fucking called it "Accelerating the Arches" in the press release and with a bunch of buzzwords about, yet again, changing the face of the company. A bunch of stuffed-shirts in marketing trying to justify their salaries.

>DA EBIL CORPORATIONS ARE KILLING THE COMFY HECKIN CHAIN RESTAURANTS!
McDonalds corporate put out a press release awhile back where they acknowledged that the cookie-cutter square stores were both a design challenge and inefficient, and will be dropped going forward. Yet you can be sure we're going to have this Reddit-tier thread reposted another 6 gorillion times.

The non-meme answer is "effective use of limited space through innovative architecture".
