They're called coney dogs because Coney Island was the first place the Greek immigrants encountered hot dogs after they went through Ellis Island. When they moved to the Midwest and opened up restaurants, they called them "Coney Islands" and served the new dish they discovered with a type of topping they brought from their home country.
