French places like Alinea and The French Laundry are the most pretentious bullshit ever. People literally only go there so they can take pictures of all their dishes and brag about their expensive meals on twitter.

I've been to plenty of upscale Italian restaurants and nice steakhouses and had great meals that the chefs prepared based on taste and not some artsy fartsy bullshit.

I took my gf to Alinea in Chicago for our anniversary a few years ago. It was pretty nuts, they have really elaborate platings and it was all very beautiful to look at but honestly I was sometimes confused about how exactly to eat about 40% of the dishes. There was a lot of vertical stuff that didn't really lend itself to forks and knives, and the dessert was particularly confusing pic related. It all tasted very good but it wasn't a whole lot of food, mostly just interesting/colorful presentations. It definitely was overpriced (~$800 for the two of us)

I had a much better experience at Minibar, even if there was a lot of fucking around with foam infusions and deconstructed olives. It tasted better and I left fuller.
