Opened this up last night. Delicious, way better than my Lagavulin 16 or Laphroaig 10. Almost the polar opposite of the Ardbeg An Oa. Thanks to whoever rec'd it in the threads.

Japanese whiskey, on the whole, tastes most similar to scotch. And just as scotch is dominated by blends and single malts, so are Japanese whiskeys. There are actually zero rules governing Japanese whiskey (thanks, Japan!), so there's nothing stopping a Japanese distillery from making a rye whiskey, but if you find one, please let us know.

Anyways, the ones I've tried will tend to have more peat and smoke and sometimes brine character. You get less of the "shortbread with apple jam" that I associate with Irish whiskeys.

I am of the opinion that in the States, there are no great Japanese whiskeys to try unless you are prepared to spend over $50 at the least.

You'd be lucky if it was significantly above 20% whiskey. I mean, Fireball is a "whiskey", too, but it sure doesn't taste like one and for obvious reasons.
>Blended whiskey is a mixture that contains straight whiskey or a blend of straight whiskeys containing not less than 20 percent straight whiskey (on a proof gallon basis) and, separately or in combination, other whiskey or neutral spirits. For the blended whiskey to be labeled with a particular grain type (i.e., blended rye, malt, wheat, or bourbon whiskey), at least 51% of the blend must be straight whiskey of that grain type. The part of the content that is not straight whiskey may include unaged grain distillates, grain neutral spirits, flavorings, and colorings.
