Is it true that fresh eggs sink while old eggs float?

And if so, is it also true that an egg that sinks but stands up on one end is somewhere inbetween? If so, what is the best way to use such eggs? Will they still be good when scrambled up with some spam and vegetables, or should they be hardboiled instead?
