I have insider knowledge re: fake reviews. A huge percentage of Google reviews these days are fake, but here's what you probably wouldn't guess about this: most fake positive reviews were NOT paid for by the business the positive review is for.

The best fake reviews belong to accounts with at least 10 other reviews. Thus, when someone pays someone to post a fake positive review for their business, the person who posts the fake review has to post like 10 other fake reviews for random businesses in the same city.

This used to apply to Yelp as well until they introduced AI software that seems to want to maintain a certain positive/negative review ratio for each business. It's basically impossible to manipulate your positive/negative review ratio on Yelp these days because of their AI. You'd think Google, with all its AI research, would be the service with the fake review-killing AI, not Yelp, but it is what it is.
