I guess it's the same over there with Bourbons as it is over here with Irish and Scotch. Less selection and higher prices... You can't really go wrong with most basic bourbons, especially from the big distilleries. Just don't expect the world from them. Also watch out for the vague brands that might be only sold over there. In the US we have obscure brands like McClelland scotch. The only thing I ever found about them was that it was likely an overseas discount brand that Bowmore uses to offload not-so-good batches. I'm sure American distilleries do the same thing in Europe.
