I use pic related or Knorr cubes. Get it boiling with the water and while you're prepping just toss shit in there like onion/garlic husks and carrot roots, maybe a bay leaf and strain it all out when I'm ready to use the broth. It's way cheaper and you get better results for practically no effort.

Get an instant pot. Way better than a microwave for dorm cooking. Grab a bottle of this shit and you can make stews or mini pot roasts real fucking easy. A little goes a real long way too.
