that's a lot of Taragui
I wonder how many kilos of Pajarito I've gone through at this point

regarding yerba, remember to buy the packaged kind made for the south american market, not the loose stuff sold in tea stores, it's overpriced

I usually use my 120 or so ml palo santo cup. It smells really nice, like resin and herbs and it isn't too hot to hold unlike some of those ceramic gourds.

As for favorite mate, I usually prefer paraguayan. Pajarito is my go-to because it's like the cheapest mate you can get here, but actually very tasty if you like that classic strong, well-aged paraguayan taste. Fede rico is also very nice and cheap for an organic mate. Kicks like a mule though, very powerful for an elaborada.
I've been experimenting more lately though, trying out some smokeless mate etc. Currently drinking Liebig - has some nice grain notes to it, quite enjoyable.

yeah, I've been drinking it this way for several years now
if you want to try, I recommend starting by filling the gourd with leaves 1/4th or 1/3rd of the way, 3/4th is only for people who've been drinking this every day for a long time and developed tolerance to the caffeine

also, the gourd is not actually necessary, you can easily brew this in a normal teacup as long as you have the straw - I recommend a small vessel because you're supposed to brew this many times like in gong fu
cold brew yerba mate is also nice, it's known as "terere" - especially nice with a sprig of fresh mint IMO

finally, buy the packaged south-american brands because the loose leaf mate you can find in tea stores is usually 10x more expensive

try yerba mate, it's smokey, herbal and bitter and is a great coffee substitute
be sure to get prepackaged south american brands and not generic tea store yerba
paraguayan brands tend to be strongest and most smokey

I've been drinking it regularly for the past three years, and I have yet to notice any negative effects.
I'm not addicted, since I can easily go weeks without drinking the stuff.

One thing I can say is that you slowly get accustomed to the caffeine and it doesn't work as well as it used to, unless you take one or two months of break.

I really recommend this stuff - it works longer than both coffee and energy drinks, is fairly inexpensive, contains lots of vitamins and seems to have no real downsides (most brands do contain some carcirogens just like coffee, but you can just buy one of the brands that are dried with hot air instead of smoke).

Right now drinking it Terere-style (cold brew) with some fresh mint.

>he effect doesn't occur shortly after, rather about 3 hours after consumption
bullshit, it works fast just like coffee, except you need to steep it many times, so the whole drinking process takes a bit longer
> lasts longer
true, up to 5 or 6 hours in my experience
> there are some vitamins that keep you healthy
true
>It's also pretty cheap
mostly true, depending on where you live
remember to never buy yerba mate at teashop prices, those are a total ripoff. buy prepackaged south-american brands instead.
>with a bit sugar
I'd say it's better without sugar, but do as you wish
>actually 3 tea spoons are enough for one cup
it won't have the effect you're looking for then
you need to fill a small cup at least 1/3rd of the way

it's impossible to be snobby about mate, because mate has no grades like coffee or tea
all mate is good mate, it's all preference
maybe you can be snobby about the cup and drinking straw, but that's just kinda silly

in general I recommend this shit, works for much longer than coffee, makes you relaxed and is supposed to be decently healthy too

paraguayan mate is the superior variety

if you're talking about the bottled variety, that's like saying all tea tastes like shit because you had nestea once and it was bad

yeah it is a lot like gong fu, generally even more leaves and steepings, I basically fill 3/4 of the cup with leaves since I've been drinking this stuff for a few years now
most prepackaged south american brands are good, don't buy loose teashop-style mate, it's generally too expensive and old
I started with Rosamonte Suave since it's quite mild, Cruz de Malta is similar but more caffeine
Pajarito is great too if you're craving something stronger, I'm a big fan but probably pick something else for now
mate doesn't really have grades the way tea does, most mate is similarly priced unless it's organic, then it's like 50% more expensive

leaving tea for long will actually supposedly bring out some stuff that neutralises caffeine so it might actually be less stimulating
if you want a good alternative to coffee I recommend yerba mate. I've been drinking the stuff for two years now, keeps you going much longer than coffee if you prepare it the traditional way
