mincemeat was originally just what it sounds like : minced (or ground) meat.
they made little pies with it called mince pies.
then they started adding spiced fruit and nuts to the mince pies to make them more festive.
then at some point they decided the spiced fruit and nuts taste better without the meat, so there is no longer any meat in mincemeat. just fruit and raisins soaked in brandy.
