Legumes are some of the best foods to prevent diabetes. Eat lentils, beans, chickpeas, split peas, etc at each meal if possible, or at least daily. If that's white rice you're eating, switch to brown rice or try to substitute it from time to time with barley, and try to favor sweet potatoes over white potatoes. Bananas should be fine, but I don't think granola is very good. Most granola is heavily sweetened with a bunch of added oils.

In general, get lean and eat lean. Eat whole foods rather than refined foods. Don't be afraid of carbohydrates like some of the guys in this thread, just be mindful of what you're getting them from.

Try to swap meat out for legumes. A lot of legumes have a similar savory proteiny flavor, they're very cheap, and simple to prepare. Some require soaking before cooking (lentils and split peas don't) but the cooking itself just involves boiling/simmering them until they're soft, then draining them and adding spices
