You misunderstand. But I will grant you that there ARE real foods and fake foods (what Pollan calls "foodlike substances". Pic related is an example. What do they taste like? They taste like Funyuns. Maybe if you're super sharp you'll recognize the flavor of extruded corn against the dehydrated onion powder, salt and sugar, but most won't because they don't extrude corn in their own kitchen. You might suspect there's some kind of dehydrated dairy product adding depth, but could you tell whether it's whey or buttermilk? No.

Compare that to anything you would make from scratch in your own kitchen using recognizable ingredients. The flavors will be recognizable in the final result.

I have no fucking idea. They are terrible. But people gobble up all kinds of terrible shit. Just walk through the supermarket and look at all the bags and boxes of terrible stuff. More than half the stuff there is garbage, but people buy it and eat it.

Ever had Funyuns? They're even worse than Doritos.
