Has anyone made sauerkraut before?

I just tried it for the first time on Sunday, so it's been fermenting for 3 days now. How do I tell when it's ready?

It just smells like fresh vegetables basically.

I just cut up a green cabbage, put it in a big mixing bowl, mixed about 2 tablespoons of sea salt in, and massaged it until it was really wilted/soft, then have let it sit in a mason jar with one of the big leafs secured on top of the jar.

Pretty well-liked worldwide as far as I know, but I'm the only person in my circle of family/friends that likes it. Of course, no one I know can even muster up the courage to try it. Pussies.
