Man, I haven't had split pea soup in too long.
Boil all the flavour out of a hamhock or other fatty cut of pork and throw the split peas and some sliced carrots and leeks in the broth. Have the meat on the side with some mustard.
Delicious, cheap, and literally impossible to fuck up.
Add a little splash of vinegar to it after plating to thicken it and get a slight tanginess to the taste.

I'm sure you can do pretty much the same with lentils too. Or potatoes for that matter.

Ohhh, that's what it is?
gule ærter in Danish. Literally "yellow peas".
Yeah, you have that with some meat and mustard on the side.
Split pea soup in English I guess.
