Thanks friend. I just got into whisky and went real hard trying everything. Tried laphroaig first and thought it tasted like burnt tires but stubbornly decided i was gonna see what others saw in it.

That list is the order I successfully used to speed-initiate a good friend so we could enjoy the hobby together. Alternatively my recommendation for a beginner is:

Try a double of glenmo 10 to start. All scotch is going to be gross at first because your palate is more attuned to corn from years of only being exposed to Jack. Glenmo is like the vodka of scotch, it'll give you a frame of reference for how decently distilled barley tastes, which all other flavors build on.

On your way home from that bar, buy a bottle of Laphroaig 10. Don't drink anything else except water or milk until you have finished the bottle. Seriously. You won't like it at first, gonna taste like chewing a piece of burnt tire covered in band-aids.

Laphroaig 10 is considered the opposite of a 'beginner' scotch because it's a peaty punch in the face, and most people don't like peat & smoke to start. However, peat and smoke are a huge part of the scotch flavor landscape, even outside of islay. I see lots of newbies dancing around bottle selection or only partially enjoying otherwise great whiskys because they mistakenlh taught themselves early on "I don't like peat, it tastes like medicine".

Dark craft beers taste like medicine at first too, but with some patience, you find out they frequently have the most interesting flavor profiles.
