I want a loving father, but I know it won't make me a better chef, so I don't know if it counts.

We can all look through catalogues and traipes the isles of Pier 9 ogling the novelty goods and shabby-chic accoutrement, but you'll never find a caring father figure on the third shelf down, isle 13, next to the boston shakers.

I suppose an ice-ball mould in the shape of the classic smiley face would insert at least a modicum of joy into an otherwise morbid existence, but it will never be the key to torment of the soul. Nothing - no matter how cute or how practical - will ever show me how life could have been, if I had had a male role model to have looked up to in my adolescence.
