Look, lets approach this from a scientific standpoint.

The onion has fumes of sulfenic acid escaping from its slices. Therefore, in order to eliminate the problem of the fumes binding with the water in your eyes creating sulferic acid, one should simply cut their onions with their arms outstretched so as to keep their eyes in a position that is not directly over the fuming onions.

Also, be sure to work quickly so as to not let the onion fumes accumulate and find their way to your sensitive eyes.
