To be fair, some of the shit psychology has come up with as a "treatment" for mental illness has been terrifying in its own right - snake pits, electroshock therapy, narcotic enemas, lobotomies, widely proscribing mind altering drugs where we have extremely limited knowledge on how they actually work, and so on.

The FDA banned added trans-fats from foods in 2019; pretty much all of those junk food products would have had transfats & needed to be reformulated. That could be behind the flavor change you noticed.
