This is actually hilarious. The US practically invented food safety standards. Europe didn't really have any sort of food safety concerns until the 1990s. And it wasn't until 2002 that the EFSA was established. And guess who it was modeled after.

Despite this the only significant differences between North American and European food regulators are the initial approach when bringing new food to market, and labeling requirements of which the US is more strict.

The FDA, in American fashion (at least when it comes to food) takes an innocent until proven guilty approach. Europe is the opposite, in true modern metropolitan european fashion, requiring tons of red tape and direct approval before a new item can be sold as food.

That said in terms of quality and safety the US is 3rd in the world. However most of western Europe has a score in the 80s as well so it's not much different. There are a couple of notable exceptions to this however. The UK falls well below Russia in quality and safety of foods, and is 1 step above Japan. Italy is much lower, which I imagine the rampant organized crime is partially to blame not necessarily across the entire country.
