depends on the mayo. most mayo (like hellmann's, popp or heinz) is so bland it will ruin your fries so it's better to use ketchup unless you know you're gonna get good mayo like pic related or homemade

I can only speak for germany but here hellmann's mayo is mid-tier at best. I think all american mayo uses soybean oil which is pretty disgusting compared to sunflower or canola oil so you will probably never get something as good as pic related in america.
hellmann's used to make god tier ketchup and then 2 years ago or so they changed the recipe (much lower calories) and now it's just as mid as their mayo

is luvat available outside of germany? it destroys all the known brand mayo here including hellmann's, heinz, thomy, knorr etc.
