Its a good benchmark, but you should be tipping on service.

IE, if I order 4 scotchs vs ordering 4 vodka tonics and I tip by percentage I could be tipping 5$ for the scotchs vs 2 bucks for the vodka tonics. Its the same amount of drinks, the same amount of effort (you could even argue the vodka tonics take more effort) so why would I tip differently? I benchmark my tip off of percentage in most cases but it ultimately comes down to how much effort, particularly over what is expected, the service person puts towards my experience.
