In western etiquette it is considered impolite to sip soup from a spoon. The western spoon is designed to allow the user to pour the entire contents of the soup directly into their mouth. One fluid motion is all that is required to go from bowl to mouth.

The eastern spoon is designed to be use din the opposite manner. The eastern soup spoon is designed to allow the user to sip the broth. Then the user utilizes chopsticks or directly drinks from the bowl when they want to consume the larger materials in the soup. However, these actions are considered extremely rude in western dining etiquette.
