See, your mistake was assuming these people have an inner monologue or thoughts that would pass as logical to a human.

When I was a kid we went on a road trip through the flyover states. It was an educational experience. The miserable slop that the locals called "food" didn't agree with my GI tract, but I found that most places had a club sandwich and so I ate many of those as an alternative to hamburgers, the only other source of lettuce (in turn the only source of fresh plant matter).

To this day, when I think of club sandwiches I think of slow-talking, alarmingly obese inbreds serving oversalted food in a restaurant that smelled like learned helplessness. Imagining what those people are doing now - actually doing I mean - fills me with disgust.

it's a combination of two things:
1. in many states alcohol sales are restricted for religious reasons (for example no sales on sunday or no sales after 5 pm)
2 .in many states wine is considered politically suspect (associated with catholics, french people, well traveled people, coastal people, you get the idea, just unamerican and scary people all around). so knowledge of wine, if it exists, would be suppressed. like you know those war movies where the spy is captured and told to field strip a sophisticated weapon while blindfolded, and he has to pretend he doesn't know how otherwise he'll be executed? it's like that but for beverages.
