NEW YORK — Chowdown champ Joey “Jaws” Chestnut broke his own record to gulp to a 14th win in the men’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Sunday, while Michelle Lesco took the women’s title.

Chestnut, 37, of Westfield, Indiana, downed 76 franks and buns in 10 minutes. That’s one more than he did in setting the men’s record last year, when the Coney Island contest unfolded without fans because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“It just felt good,” Chestnut, who has San Jose and Vallejo roots, said in an ESPN interview after his win Sunday. “Even if I was uncomfortable, having everybody cheer me and push me, it made me feel good.”

Lesco, 37, of Tucson, Arizona, downed 30¾ dogs in 10 minutes and called her win “an amazing feeling.”

Reigning women’s champ and record-holder Miki Sudo skipped this year because she’s expecting a baby in a few weeks with fellow competitive eater Nick Wehry. He vied for the men’s title but came up short.

The annual Fourth of July frankfurter fest normally happens outside Nathan’s flagship shop in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood. But this year’s planning took place amid shifting coronavirus restrictions, and the event was held in a nearby minor-eague baseball stadium, Maimonides Park, with 5,000 spectators.

In 2020, it was held indoors and without an in-person audience because of the pandemic.

Chestnut said he’d missed the fans last year. “I’ve been looking forward to this all year,” he told ESPN.

“Next year, we hope to return to the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues, where we have held this event for decade after decade,” James Walker, a senior vice president for Nathan’s, said in a statement.

As part of the competition, the company every year donates 100,000 Nathan’s Famous hot dogs to the Food Bank for New York City.

For years, Chestnut has dominated his competitors at Nathan’s July Fourth hot dog eating contest, but this year he kicked things up a notch. Chestnut, who adopted the nickname “Glizzy Gladiator” for this year’s contest, bested his own record by gobbling 75 hot dogs, a feat that earned him his thirteenth Mustard Yellow Belt.

Chestnut has spent the past week sleeping off the wieners and buns, but last night, he finally felt well enough to make an appearance on late night show Desus & Mero. “Bro, how the fuck do you do that?” asked The Kid Mero of his guest’s hot dog eating prowess. “I’ll eat five hot dogs and I’ve got to lay down for 10 hours, at least.”

Epic eating champ Joey Chestnut, wolfed down a world record 75 dirty water dogs and buns Saturday, capturing the famed ‘W’ on Coney Island for the 13th time.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Chestnut, whose face turned beet red as he shoved the dogs in his pie-hole, was gorging at a blistering pace of nearly 10 dogs a minute at one point.

With two minutes left in the blowout, Chestnut, a San Jose, California, resident, had eaten his career 1,000 hot dog, the announcer trumpeted.

The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is synonymous with the Fourth of July.

No matter the pandemic, the 104th annual dirty dog devouring went on but not at the fabled Coney Island boardwalk. This year, the contest took place indoors at a Nathan’s storage room.

The judges wore masks and practiced social distancing and the contestants were handed the wieners by assistants clad in Nathan’s masks and latex gloves.

Chestnut, nicknamed “Jaws,” has now won 13 of the last 14 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contests in the men’s division. The wiener wonder bested five other tomato cans in capturing the coveted Mustard Belt. Chestnut was chasing his 2018 mark of 74 hot dogs and buns.

Earlier, in the women’s competition, reigning hot dog-eating champ Miki Sudo downed 48 1/2 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, breaking her previous record at the Coney Island event of 41, which she set in 2017. It’s her seventh women’s Nathan’s title and a new world’s record in the women’s competition.

“To everybody watching at home, I wish you could be here,” a victorious Sudo, 34, said. The 5-foot-4, 114-pound Sudo added it was strange competing without a crowd, but the camera crew was nice enough to clap for her and call her name.
