Good tip, Anon. Thank you. Often I find myself feeling like I am emoting more than I actually am. Or sometimes I'm just more worried about not making a face that shows how crooked my nose actually is. But your comment got me thinking and I looked through my photos for more expressive shots, and I realized a lot of those are some of my favorites for a different reason. I chose the other photos mainly because I like the pose and how it shows of my costume. But these feel more in-character or tell more of a story, and that's important to me as well.

I'm the Takane! Glad you all liked my costume, I was really worried about pulling it off. I had the skirt fabric printed using a design I made from pulling the colors straight from the game, which made a big difference I think. The other thing that helped was using horsehair braid on the hem of the pink portion of the dress, it gave structure so it wouldn't just hang limp over the skirt. I had wanted to do the 3D stars like the in-game dresses, but changed my mind and used heat-n-bond stars because I was worried I would mess it up somehow and I really didn't want to ruin the printed fabric. D: Maybe I'll change the stars at some point.

I'll be there! I still have so much work to do on costumes though... I'm making Black Cat and a new Takane from iDOLM@STER cosplay for groups, then I also wanted to make Satsuki, swimsuit Takane, and Skyla, but I just don't know how much time I'll have to get everything done. Literally the only reason I mentioned that was to point out that I can't have an opinion on how the community used to be. So yes, Anon, you're right.

But I've seen a lot of discussions about this topic and have a lot of old cosplay friends and find some of the comparisons of the eras interesting when I compare them to my own experience. So I'd still like to participate in the discussion, if nothing else to understand others' perspectives.

I can't really speak on the community of the past, because I wasn't really aware of the community and didn't start getting interested in cosplay until late 2009. But I'd still like to chime in on my perception of the hobby currently. Maybe the community has just gotten larger so it doesn't seem a tightknit and friendly as it once was, but I've still been able to make a ton of friends at cons with people who are genuinely interested in all the goofy shit I am and who love to cosplay for both fun and for the crafting aspect, so I know it's still possible to find that.

I know photoshoots and social networking are important for a lot of people regardless, and I don't think there is anything problematic with that until people become obsessive about it and focus on that aspect to the point that they start losing friends. People are very number focused, but I've seen that in just about every online community I've ever been apart of growing up.

I've participated in a few masquerades, but have found that because they take up so much time due to prejudging and the event itself that I generally prefer to just spend that time hanging out with friends or doing shoots or both. I like to cosplay and shoot with cosplay and photographer friends, so it's a good time and not super serious. I do think some people only want to cosplay with or shoot with people that are perceived as having standing in the community, but I don't know how pervasive that actually is.

The amount of tutorials, resources, and quality of materials available is great. Even though I haven't been cosplaying as long as many others, I feel like I've been able to skill up more quickly as a result. There are a lot of really talented people out there now because of that, too. It's become more accessible to people I think.

I did mine pretty quickly, so it's not cleaned up, but what I did was I cut some of the length of the bang off on the wighead and then finished trimming it while wearing it so I could get it to fall where I needed it to relative to my face. I used my eyebrows as a guideline. If I were to clean this up more, I'd put it back on the wig head just to make sure the sides and edges are even.

I initially liked black as well, but after looking at references, particularly of Satsuki when she's wearing Senketsu, black just seems too dark. But I agree, I have not seen a non-black Satsuki wig that didn't feel off. I'm waiting on a wig to ship that I think has the right shade, but if I don't like it I think I'm just going to stick with black.

I've thought about buying a dark blue wig and dying it to get the right shade of black with blue undertones, but I don't really have experience with dying wigs, so I'm not sure I could achieve the look I want and not ruin a perfectly good wig.

I know what you mean, Anon, I had a similar thought. The bangs seem really thin, but I will see if I can add some more volume somehow. Or at least keep it in mind if I use a different wig.

Satsuki is the next costume I'm working on. I originally ordered a black wig, pictured here, but I think I'm going to go with a black/blue mix if I can find one that doesn't look too blue in photos. I went ahead and did a quick trim of the black wig and a kind of makeup test, just to see how I want to style everything. I thought about keeping the bangs a big longer, since they do cover her eyebrows slight in references, but I think having them fall just above helps keep the intensity of the eyebrows from being lost in the wig.

Wish I had more to share, but I haven't started working on the costume yet. I've got my materials all gathered, with the exception of stuff for her sword.

Just got a preview shot back from Katsucon so here we go!

>What fabrics you used
Upholstery vinyl, vinyl ribbon, and cotton for the waist cincher, knit for the dress, 4 way printed and metallic spandex for the boot covers (which you can't see in this photo)

>How you styled your wig
It's a short wig from Epic Cosplay that I trimmed the bangs with some shears and a razor, then wore a headband underneath with wire to add the spikes (which were just foam with wefts glued to them).

>Techniques or tricks
I used a combination of worbla, craft foam, thicker eva foam, and styrofoam to make all of the armor. The sword was made from insulation foam and pvc pipe, with worbla for the details on the hilt. The big glove is just a hockey glove that I cut off some excess fabric/foam and made a cover for. Googly eyes also worked well as rivets on the glove.

I changed my original flight from the last flight Thursday night to tomorrow because I was worried about delays causing a domino effect and for some reason not being able to make it in before Friday. My flight is supposed to get in around 10:33, so I am kind of freaking out right now because I know the snow is supposed to start before then and I'm worried the flight will either be delayed/cancelled or it'll leave anyway and I'll be stressed about landing safely. I'd book an even earlier flight, but I can't miss that much work.
