>How did you enjoy the con?
the things i went to were awesome! but this was mostly because of the people, not the con itself.
>Any dealer swag?
nope. dealer's hall was pretty shit, IMO. spent way too much in AA from a few of my favorite artists that i only see at fanime though. AA was WAY too print-heavy IMO and i missed seeing the craft tables.
>Favorite cosplay?
was it me, or were there not that many really awesome costumes this year? the gundams were great, and i saw a really gorgeous lady oscar, but overall i was really underwhelmed by most of the costumes.
>Events you enjoyed?
karaoke contest (made the top 10!), toku meetups, people recognizing my goddamn scarlet claw costume.
>How hung over are you right now?
not at all. feels fuckin great, man.

OP, there's a metallic silver face/bodypaint available from kryolan. i think the other major stage makeup brands have it too

>What are you hype for
karaoke, musicfest, the tokusatsu meetup
>What are you working on
trying to finish up starninger for the toku meet
>How screwed are you?
sorta....need some fuckin brown cowboy boots and of COURSE no one has any cheap ones right now. waiting on some crucial shit in the mail too.
>What are you wearing/cosplaying?
still working on the lineup....mostly old stuff. can confirm snorlax poodle skirt, oren pierre alfonso (KR gaim) and starninger.
>What are your plans?
relax, try to forget that i'm unemployed (thanks congress), actually GO to panels this year (any recs?), and roam the AA.
>Can Maguma down 200 tacos in 20 minutes?
fuck yes. without vomiting after?.....that's a tough one.

ben is actually a colleague of mine....we're funded by the same NSF-funded organization (though i'm a marine geologist) that focuses on understanding microbial life in the deep biosphere.

also for those scoffing at the neuroscientist working at starbucks....you have NO IDEA how hard it is to get a postdoc or faculty position these days. i've been looking/applying for another postdoc since march and still don't have anything lined up (current position ends 1/1). no one is getting funded right now, so there's a lot of people who just finished PhDs that can't find a job. i'm fully expecting to do some barista-ing this coming year until i can find something else. academic STEM jobs don't just grow on trees, especially in the medical fields where there's a SUPER glut of postdocs right now.

to get this thread back on track, a selfpost of my historically correct (then takarazuka-ized) marie robe francaise.

my biggest thing is fabric selection. use what would be appropriate for the time period, so thin wool suiting or heavy serge for uniforms is great. use historical patterns (there are many available thanks to the reenactment community that does rev. war/civil war battles). no polyester fabrics if i can help it. women's clothes should also be rank and time period appropriate fabrics. so lush things for royalty and simple cottons for the working class.

also PROPER UNDERGARMENTS. there is nothing worse than a great historical dress with the wrong shaped set of stays underneath. learn about stays (corsets) and other underbits changed throughout the centuries.....if you have the right foundation, your clothes will lay better and just look more correct. this goes for underskirts, pantaloons, petticoats, men's underclothes etc. each era had its own type.

for wigs, there's an amazing new book out on how to style 18c hairdos....i did the kickstarter for it and got it over the summer, but i think you can buy it now.

what time period/costume do you want to make anon? i do this a lot and it's kind of become my thing. would love to give more specific advice if i knew what you'd like to make.

OP, if you're an advanced sew-person, JP ryan makes a historically correct man's frockcoat from the mid 18c......wide skirt and cuffs, etc. pattern can be bought here:
http://www.jpryan.com/details/1750.html

she also has a later 18c (1780) men's coat pattern, found here:
http://www.jpryan.com/frock.htm

i've made the first coat mentioned....came out very nice and definitely looks the part, which most costume patterns will not do.

> What day are you arriving?
thursday PM in time to get my badge. flying east from CA sucks balls for getting in early.
> Host or no?
hell yes. hyatt this year.
> What's your costly lineup
costly is a good descriptor lol. "good morning" bilbo baggins, 1 or 2 effie trinket costumes, some pokemans derpitude, and maybe dr. crusher.
> Are you marching in/watching/skipping the parade?
walking with the tolkien folks.
> Voltaire, y/n
nah, not really my thing. would rather go see abney park play, but looks like they're not coming this year.

YES! the HMK concert, AA, and the toku meetups were the only reasons i went. all were totally worth it.

i went to last year's (was my first west coast cgl meetup) and yeah, it was super chill. people had food and just hung out and chatted for a while. a few drunk folks, but nothing ridiculous.

vintage kenmores are great (i have a 1970s avocado green one).....not so sure about the newer models. try looking at reviews on amazon for different models and see what others think.

vintage white brand machines are great as well.

not sure about the percentage of local vs out of town artists, but IMO fanime has one of the best AA's i've been to (except megacon and dragoncon). good variety of items and fandoms, i spent more $ in the AA last year than i normally do because everything was so nice.

OP, if you bought lame from joann's (and it's not the stretchy stuff, which isn't lame) then that stuff is too thin and delicate to make a garment out of by itself...it needs to be fused to another fabric first (like a light cotton). also the weave is very open, which is probably why you're having snagging issues.

secondly, the type of pleating on that skirt is a sunburst pleat pattern.....not something you're really going to be able to do yourself unless you're at a very high level of draping/pleating ability. it's easier to just buy a pre-pleated panel to make your skirt from.

i was really close to cancellng my hotel room and just eating the $55 badge cost, but announcing HMK was something i didn't expect. this is definitely my last year going all weekend though. next year i'll just drive up for saturday.

i'm down to the point where i do 1 big CA con and dragoncon, mostly due to time. if this fanime is shit, i'm not sure what to try next....SDCC and AX fall right in the middle of when i'm most busy at work.... maybe sakuracon?

i think the larger issue for housing is that there just AREN"T enough rooms in the hotels near the con available to meet demand. i don't think scalping is a major issue for fanime, but i do think they should put a cap on the number of rooms that can be in a person's name (like 2). i like the badge requirement, as long as it's announced early and can be implemented with artists and professional reg (which this year, it was not).

we'll see how reg goes this year.....hoping they post day 0 hours soon so i can decide if i want to pick up at clockwork or fanime.

oh whoops missed that you hadn't tried pincurls! this will help a lot, as it gives the clips something to hold onto.
