Archer definitely, as I already have the swords made.

I may go as Ceaser, because my friend might be planning to go as Joseph. Depends

Wouldn't making the green scalemail be much more difficult than his regular leafy stuff? Wouldn't it be easier to get some green, fur/leafy textured fabric and sew it into a few layers?

Just finished my Homura's Shield prop commission for a friend. Got to try a bunch of new techniques to make it look all nice and shiny and smooth, and I'm really happy with the finished product. Yaaay, Woodworking is fun

Sure, thats all you NEED (That or a hand saw), but if you have access to it, a bandsaw is great. So much more control. Also, for small pieces, the up and down motion of a jigsaw can break them. The constant downward motion of the bandsaw is much safer for the piece

Woodworking/Weaponcrafter Anon here,

If you don't have a workshop type environment with a few tools available, I'd say stay away from wood for now. If you have access to something as basic as a scroll saw/band saw though, its not a bad way to make weapons.

If you're doing something thin, with a thick handle, do a stacking method. Build the sword up in layers, blade in the center, handles on the outside. Basic tools for all this are: Saw, Wood Rasp, Wood Glue, Clamps, and Sandpaper, ranging from 100 (Rough) grit to anywhere above 300. Construct, Sand smooth, Primer (I use Bullseye 123), sand the primer, repeat a few times till smooth, then paint.

IF YOU ARENT USING WOOD, go to your local home depot and get some Insulation Foam. Its thick, rigid, and makes damn good props. For that kind of prop making, you need: Something to cut the foam (Google Hot Wire Cutter), Sandpaper (Rough and Fine), and paint. If you're going to use spraypaint, use a LOT of primer. If spray paint touches the foam, it melts it (Think styrofoam + gasoline = napalm)

Cheers. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions. Pic is wooden Kanshou/Bakuya I made last winter

Homura Shield for my friend is coming along nicely. I really need to thin it out though. Dunno how I'm gonna manage it though... Maybe there's some trick I can figure out on the table saw...

I feel like the only thing they really needed to fix this year was the wait to buy a pass. I forgot to preorder mine, and the line to get them on the first day was TERRIBLE. Last year, I remember 0 problems- I was able to walk in, 10am on the first day, wait for maybe 5 minutes, and buy a pass. Had to wait until the line died down at like, 4pm this year. Was really fucking stupid

I got mine several weeks ago, US. I then ordered a second set for my friend, his arrive within like, a week.

Also, to those of you who would consider making your 3DMG Holsters out of wood - Don't. Unless your harness is perfect, it's a BITCH to lug it around

>> No.7075935 [View]

So, for the people who have headed home already, how did the first day go for you all?

Half my stuff started falling apart as we were walking around. Still got some good pictures though. I guess all wood 3DMG isn't the type of thing to be rushed. Left some gnarly bruises on my hips, too.

Boots, look for sites that teach you how to make boot covers. Whether or not you want to make full boots from there is your deal

>>7074316
What kind of tools do you have available? A wooden dowel and 3 pieces of plexiglass would do just fine. Draw on, cut out, file down, cut dowel notches, glue/screw plastic in

Great Sword -
Depending on how long it would be (Lets use this pic for reference), you could split it into 3 parts - The Blade, Pommel, and Handle.

If you want realistic weight, stick with wood for the blade. If not, foam for the blade, and wood for the pommel and handle. That way the center of balance is around the pommel. A hard, heavy wood would be something like Maple. Soft and light would be something like Poplar.

For foam, this stuff is what I use

No matter what project, you'll need a few things- Wood Glue, Sandpaper, some sort of file or rasp, screws or nails, and maybe some clamps. A tad expensive to start up, but worth it in the end. The real killer is the paint

Home Depot! Lowes! Ace Hardware! What you're looking for isn't costume making, its prop making, which means you don't really need a fabric store, you need a construction store.

Home Depot has all sorts of precut strips of lumber (Poplar is very soft, easy to work with. Shaping, you just need a handsaw and a wood rasp, and some sandpaper)

They also sell insulation foam, which, at my store, comes in an inch thick, pink, solid wall of foam.

Anything else you possibly need for props, they should have it. PVC, Dowels, Screws, Paint (For basic painting, use art store acrylic paints for more detailed, fine colored shit)

Have fun, Anon. Prop making is a blast.

My first boot cover. Overall, super super proud of it. Easy to reproduce too.

KCon is on Saturday. Movement gear paint is curing, blades are done, costume is sewn, I just need to adjust the straps a bit, then sew my other boot.

>> No.7069717 [View]

No pics yet, but I finally figured out, after being up for like, 6 hours (2am-8am), how to make a goddamn boot cover for my SnK Cosplay.

Guh, those things are a pain.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for extra little details, but why copper wire? You don't actually see any. All the wire fired from it is coiled up inside.

>> No.7062381 [View]

>>7062257
It's not really supposed to look mechanical. In the anime, it just holds the wire. It itself doesn't actually move.

For the glossy bit, I dirtied it up a tad, scratched it up, made it look a bit more worn. Nothing I can really capture with my phone camera though

What are you going to use to paint them with? I'm in the process of making a DragonScale Helmet, but its on hold until I figure out what to do after it's resin'd and shaped

3DMG Back Piece is completely done.

All that's left is those two little pieces on the side and the boxes

Wow, it looks absolutely fantastic. If you go back and repaint it sometime, you should sand down each paint job, then wetsand the clearcoat. Would make it look even better

I'll add some detail lines and the wire from the trigger to the handle. That should be solid

He was who I looked the closest to, and once I get my hair a tad lighter it will be solid. I know the thing with /cgl/ is go with a wig, but I'm honestly too lazy to style one for this one. So, I'll make up for it with the costume and 3DMG
