What does /CGL/ think about photoshoots in famous locations? I know you guys were giving this girl hell about her plans to shoot at Versailles but honestly I really like the photos.

Is it really disrespectful?

>> No.8561039

Attention-grabby but not disrespectful. Versailles was a place for spoiled rich people to act rich and obnoxious.

Doing cosplay photos in graveyards, famous battlefields, places like that, would be disrespectful.

it's okay. you should get a permission first, tho, if it isnt public property, just to cover your own ass since some don't allow pictures being put up on the internet no matter if its for profit or not.

Of course you should make sure your location fits your costume and ideally you have someone with a photo skill to make it worth it.
Shooting narutards in front of Versaille will look like shit, and bringing a fitting costume but taking pictures with a potato is a waste of time.

If you remember correctly, we were "giving you hell" because you pitched a fit when Versailles's rules were quoted at you.... because you wanted to cheat and get around them. A photoshoot is not disrespectful to the location or the people who lived there hundreds of years ago - it's disrespectful to the workers who have to chase your childish ass down and force you to change because you knowingly broke the rules for your precious photos.

Also, this board is anonymous. Why would you pretend to be some rando who somehow knows that this particular Belle is the one who posted anonymously to CGL months ago?

Oh hello, how's it going /cgl/?

For the record I only wore the costume to the petite Triton and the hamlet, part of versailles but not the main palace. I did wear the skirt, blouse and wig to the main building but no one stopped me or even realized it was part of a costume. I did get stopped by one girl at security, who simply wanted to complement me on my skirt.

At the petite triton I went through security twice in full costume and no one said a damned thing. There where no posted rules about costumes and the rules in the guides said nothing about it either. I also found no rules about it on the website, which is why I had asked 4chan in the first place. I had packed another dress to change into incase I had any issues at all but my mom and I shot for a good hour- hour and half walking all over the grounds/hamlet without a single issue. I did get stopped a few times by tourist who wanted a photo / me to pose with their kids, but that was about it. Honestly there where only about 15-20 people outside of my group in that area at any given time, for Versailles it was fairly deserted.

I read a lot of peoples accounts of trying to get in in costume. Most of the girls who where turned away where wearing big full petti coats and had super puffed up hair in odd colors and a ton of shit in it.
The girls who had zero issue has dresses with some volume but not a ton, normal colored hair (most used their own) that was styled simply with maybe 1-2 bits of bows or whatever. They also chose cords that where more subdued.
Worst case seems to be when you go through security they'll ask you to change. I'd pack an extra tshirt and shorts or something easy to carry and change into if asked. (If you are told to change you can skip the line when you come back) they will not kick you out and they won't give you a particularly hard time about it either.

>Claims on-location shoot is disrespectful

We get the same complaints that European cosplayers, especially British, never shoot on location.

Let me elucidate.

Europe has a lot of pretty places. Europe will charge you to enter most of these places. Europe will often charge you hundreds - thousands of quid to do a shoot in these places, because they're used to filming for regency productions or shooting with Vogue or whatever.

For the little cosplayer working on a non-profit project, it's very hard to get locations.

I don't know about France beyond the Louvre - where a great many friends have shot in the main courtyard without trouble. But London is a nightmare. National Trust houses might allow you to shoot on the grounds in the gardens, if you get permission from literally everyone in charge. Sometimes opera houses will let you use foyers and bar locations. The National Museum doesn't give a single monkeys about people shooting in their main hall, which is brilliant. But that's about it.

I've have both photographers and cosplayers from a shoot get permission to shoot at a manor, only to have us asked to leave because the promotional staff don't liase properly with security. Literally all locations worth bothering with are an uphill battle.

Don't even talk to me about Kyoto Gardens.

She went to her location, she got her shots, and as far as we known none of the staff gave a shit. No-one was inconvenienced that day. That's the kind of shoot I cross my fingers for every time.

Stay salty cgl.

Hi. Someone who takes photos in VERY crowded tourist spots in Europe here. Just wanted to give a few tips for those who plan to take photos in famous locations.

It's okay. First, if it's in front of a castle, no one will give a shit about you. I'm always very nervous and I was asked a few times if it's commercial, but the "No, it's not commercial, it's a hobby" is normally absolutely enough and the guards won't mind you that much.

But the most important thing is... you should come as early as you can. I took photos in the most crowded tourist spots ever, and there are no people in the background, at all. The secret behind it is to wake up at 5 a.m. and just be there before everyone else winds up. I can't stress enough how important it is.

By the way, you can always politely ask security if they can let you in to take a few shots. Sometimes they really don't mind. If you stay calm and polite, a lot of things can work out.

If you think there are only 4 interesting things to see in America then you obviously have never been to America, or know anything about it.

Question about the graveyard thing: I live across the street from an old graveyard that lets people do things like gravestone rubbings/photos/etc. Do you think it would it be disrespectful to take cosplay photos there if the graves were just in the background and not being touched/used as props? There's like one grave from the 90s but most of the graves are 100-300+ years old so it's not going to piss off a family member

Just get in contact with the cemetery, Anon. There are a lot of wacky people that are into learning about history through gave stones (bare with me, I can't remember what it's calles), so it's not like they won't expect a similar call. I doubt they'll care all long as you don't go modeling against grave stones.

Their lack of organization and their frighteningly inefficient bureaucracy is enough to put a stop on any boner I had for them.

Just take a look at the Irish threads.

Ireland doesn't get as much flack because it's a smaller country.

If I were comparing let's say American security to Israeli security then yeah, laugh all you want. But in my experience in my field, holy shit the Irish system is somehow the worst combination of the UK and the US systems. They have some good things which I would like to implement here, but those are far and few in between.

I think it'd be cool to do a shoot in a real-life location that was portrayed in an anime; a good example would be the Griffith Observatory with Macross Frontier cosplay, or that bridge in Kobe that's in Fate a lot. In general I'm not a huge fan of location shoots at tourist traps, though.

I thought about using my normal hair for Belle, but I didn't want it to turn out like the image quoted. Belle is one of those characters from Disney that has a very unique twist and list thing going on and doesn't work well with natural hair because it won't hold properly unless you use TONS of spray and then your hair looks greasy and all sorts of stuff.

A few of my friends are planning a batman shoot next month at the place they used for Wayne Manor in the film. Apparently they allow any and all photography and couldn't give a shit as long as you don't sell it.

It pains me that they're doing a shoot at such a nice place with shitty batman costumes. If I could afford the travel I would take something that would actually suit a house of that style.
