Have any of you ever financially supported any performers, maybe by buying their merchandise/singles/albums, subscribing to their Patreon, etc.?

Also, has the trend of people aspiring to become professional idols in Japan died out? I don't think I know of any currently active net idols who aim for that goal anymore, at least not publicly.

/cgl/ is a board for the following:

• Cosplay
• Lolita
• J-fashion
• Conventions & gatherings
• Sewing & prop-making
• Craftsmanship tools/materials & tutorials
• LARPing
• Discussing accessories such as wigs/circle lenses/prosthetics/makeup (These must be within the context of the board-related topics listed above; weight loss threads should be kept in /fit/, beauty and fashion generals should be kept in /fa/)

Our board rules are simple:

• Thread content must be related to one of the categories covered in the list above. Off-topic threads and replies will be deleted.
• Singling people out maliciously is not tolerated and will result in a ban. 4chan is not your personal army. The singling out rule applies to vendetta threads and replies being made to attack a specific person, as well as predatory behavior like doxing. Discussing an individual in general isn't against the rules as long as it's done within context of cosplay/lolita/j-fashion.

I watched a few of them and I want to climb through the screen and murder whoever filmed these.
For the Synchronized one, she clearly either did not practice that dance enough or just flat out doesn't have enough dance experience because she's struggling to stay in time with the music and her movements are not sharp at all, which is one of the biggest parts of the dance. Synchronized looks stupid as a solo if you don't know what you're doing.
Butterfly Grafitti looks the best (not that that's saying much; the bar isn't super high for this group) but I'm also basing this off the fact that she's the only one that wore a remotely interesting outfit and the few parts of the dance I can see since again, this camera girl is ass. This seems to be the most stable dancer for this group so far, but I'm not giving this much praise. She needed a way longer skirt if she's gonna be doing that many turns and jumps.

Also when did Loli-Pop Project rebrand as qorus? Was this mentioned in a previous thread and I missed it?

In all seriousness, have any non-Asians/hafu (besides Beckii) ever gotten into an idol group and stayed there for a while?

Not OP but honestly, no. Not one. Not even Amina stayed and I feel like she might have been there the longest. I think you can maybe count Ally & Sally since they are in Seishun (technically) but even now they’re in Canada with the sister group.

I do think the trend has died out with those involved in the net idol/local idol scene. But those who don’t know it exist (which is funnily possible) probably want to. Every now and again you’ll see a hafu or non Asian in an idol group but it’s super under ground.

Aminyan and Keeki and Tia were all in Japan as idols for 3 years. Yukapon was never an idol in Japan. Kelsey Parnigoni was there for at least two years. The shelf life of an idol is already short and by the time these girls get to Japan they’re already in their late 20s or late teens. I don’t think it’s becaus they’re foreign is because nobody wants to see a 30 year old idol and by the time they’ve been there for a few years and grown up I doubt they want to be idols anymore. It’s still possible for girls to go to japan and become idols but since there’s so many foreign girls you really need the entire package of being thin, actually able to speak good Japanese, conventionally attractive, young and a decent dancer. Not really anyone in the Idol community these days who have those.

>> No.10084367

>has the trend of people wanting to be idols in Japan died down?

I’d argue that it was never a trend to begin with. All the people who truly wanted to go to Japan already did. The vast majority only knew about idols from Beckii Cruel and hoped some record company would pick them up from doing weeb dances which will never happen again. I think people are realizing that the idol stuff in Japan is an actual business and no company will invest time money and a visa in you simply because you’re foreign. The only recent example I can think of is Tomiko Claire who is American and can’t speak Japanese but her mom is 2nd gen Japanese American and she’s in a big idol group now after doing the Miss id thing. Even she was like 14 when she went. There’s also a lot of groups like Peachy a parade, Noora Petra and a few who went and performed in Japan at events but since most of their fans are fellow weebs it’s almost pointless and only just to say “we performed in Japan” . MOE maids of England did a Japan show a few years ago and only three old guys went. They can’t speak Japanese at all and one of the girls has a tsundere act she does but it went over horribly https://youtu.be/qzph3GYFrhM
honestly there’s zero point in performing in Japan unless you already want to live in Japan or you get into a real Japanese idol group.

Teyaberri is someone who went to japan recently to try and become an idol but she was there for only two months before moving back to America. probably had realistic ideas. she posted about how “it’s impossible to be a black idol” and she failed auditions. She also is trying to copy Seishun Gakuin and start an American sister group for Kissbee.

Aminyan was in an idol group for less than 3 months and the group itself didn’t have any fans and flopped after less than a year. Tia was in her group for less than a year and wasn’t performing with them for the majority of the time. Any girl in Japan can become an idol in an underground group like these, really.

The only foreign girls that actually partipated in major idols events were Noora and Petra and Ally and Sally. They had major CD releases and performed at Tokyo Idol Festival and what-not.

>> No.10084379

>>10084374
This is inaccurate and reeks of salt.
Ally and sally weren’t in a major idol group their group was only indie but they did perform a lot solo as well for 5 years. seishun gakuin wasnt at TIF.

Tia’s group had a major label debut but she was only in it for about a year and a few months. She suits modelling better imo. Plus her group was at TIF they just had a shit ton of members so she got lost in the background.

Noora & Petra weren’t in a major idol group, they were just background dancers for Pinky of Dempa gumi inc’s solo project. It didn’t take off so they had to leave Japan but they worked at dearstage for a while and their Dempa covers is what got them famous. If they spoke Japanese better I think they would’ve done a million times better.

Aminyan was in a group for about half a year and they had a major label debut, but before she performed solo idol with Japanese management for years at events like Tokyo Game Show for Bandai and a big idol fes with her group(wasn’t TIF though). she didn’t join a group for a long time because being black wouldn’t look right but the group she actually joined had a ~sexy~ thing so it worked better.

You’re forgetting Keekihime who had a bad rep on the Japanese internet after she stole money and slept with at least two Japanese fans who got a major label debut, was in a group in Osaka for a while and got her visa sponsored by her group.

>any girl can join an underground idol group

If that’s what makes you feel good about yourself. But unless you’re conventionally decent and speak Japanese you’re not getting into a group, even an indie one. If this was the case Teya would’ve gotten in the group, which she couldn’t despite being a great dancer. Ally & Sally are great dancers, fluent in Japanese but it literally took them 5 years of going to Japan and back doing auditions before they were accepted in a group.

Sorry for mistake in spelling English isn’t my first language. Keekihime even though she had scandals was probably the best example of someone actually becoming a legitimate idol in Japan. Her Japanese is amazing, she has a good look for Japan and dancing is good and has a solid Japanese fan base. Nobody imo has come close to doing what she did. Beckii Cruel and other cruel girls don’t count she wasn’t trying to be an idol.
>ANYONE can join these groups

Yes. That’s normal in any community though, even the professional music community.

No it’s cringey regardless. But the cringe depends on how people handle it. It just happens that people who are younger are more cringey.

I guess it's just my bias from watching Japanese idols, but heavy idols rarely look graceful and always seem like they're struggling. Like another anon said, the weight holds performers back, why wouldn't you want to be thin (and healthy) if you want to do this as your main hobby?

>> No.10087399

>>10087021
Because plenty of fat performers can look adorable too. You can have your bias but not everyone wants what you want. being fat literally doesnt matter and isn't a handicap for this hobby. Anon just needs to get better at dancing and more in shape which loosing weight won't make that magically happen. I like fatter girls performing more personally, I'm not a big fan of thin idols. It's one of the biggest reasons I like netidols more, their body types are cuter than jpop idols.

>> No.10087530

>>10087399
Hi, I'm >>10086640. First of all, thank you for acknowledging that being in shape isn't always the same as being thin, and that being fat isn't automatically a handicap for this hobby. I'm just jumping in to add that it sometimes can be a handicap though, depending on the person. Like I said in my post, my weight is a big factor in why I struggle with harder dances. I didn't expand on that, but I also have trouble singing and dancing at the same time, and I have joint problems that are caused by my weight that hurt and make it hard to practice. For me, losing weight is going to be necessary to become a better dancer, but that's not meant to be a generalization for everyone. I know fat dancers who have the strength and stamina to rock their performances, and I know skinny girls who still suffer from chronic pain and are uncoordinated and don't have the strength to keep up.

So your weight is not the only factor that determines your skill, but to say it's not a handicap is definitely not true in some cases. But also like I said, the focus for us should be on strength and health, and whatever weight loss that occurs because of that is healthy and will make us better dancers. Focusing on a number on a scale isn't a good approach. Also thanks for your support for plus size net-idols, it means a lot to my confidence to hear that! :)

Hi I’d like to share a PSA:

Honestly one of the biggest barriers for me is that I have a really deep voice for a girl and can’t sing 90% of female idol songs without pitching them down. LL groups definitely seem to be among the worst for drama, partially because their fans are younger and partially because the groups are large by default. The more people get involved in something, the more potential there is for drama. If you can find just a few likeminded people and form a small group you might have a pretty good time! And I'm an alto singer too - I totally feel that. There's nothing wrong with pitching songs. I'm starting to think that with the promo stellure has been posting, they might have more than just 1 new song in store? They seem to be different costumes. Any thoughts on this? I am actually wondering what they are planning, I thought they'd only join the masquerade

I noticed the same. There seems to be three types of promo art going out right now - the actual designs for Snowbound in the song's cover art; the earlier wintry outfits posted with the trios of girls, and these glowy cyber looking ones. I'm guessing the trio art was earlier outfit concepts for Snowbound. For the glowy ones, they look a lot like redesigned Overdriver outfits, especially if you look at the pointy purple skirt Mimi's making and compare it to the cover of Overdriver. Either that or some type of transforming/tearaway outfit for the masquerade? Either way it seems they're planning something big, and I hope they pull it off. Secretly hoping for a surprise Overdriver video alongside the performance of Snowbound, because Titania's a good singer and that song sounded like it has a lot of potential.

>> No.10088694

>>10088692
Double posting to correct myself - checked the posts again and someone pointed out the hair accessories are the same between the glowy art and the Snowbound art, so it's probably got nothing to do with Overdriver. If they're doing transforming outfits it also makes sense why Mimi gave herself 8 days to sew outfits for 4 people and mandated 1 outfit a day.

Thanks for the encouragement/song ideas, gulls! I’ve been debating whether or not this is something I want to try for a few months, but I’m feeling a bit more confident now. I’ve never taken vocal lessons, but I’m thinking I’ll try to find an instructor and take a few classes before starting for real.

To the anon who mentioned im@s, I actually have some of Makoto’s songs on my idea list! I appreciate idols with lower voices so much because of my own low alto voice.

The anisongs I have in mind are more on the side of Jrock though... and all sung by dudes. Ah well. They’re in my voice range, and so many idol performers are all in the same cutesy pop genre it might be fun to mix things up a bit.

Took some digging (I guess I deleted old screenshots and their FB page is gone now), but I found this. Berriteam was an old dance group that Teya was in, and you can find their youtube channel here - https://www.youtube.com/user/XBerriXchanX - with dance covers as old as 7 years. At some point, Teya decided to revamp it as BerriTeam Victory with new members, got a nice photoshoot done, and their page suspiciously grew to over 8k followers in a matter of days. However, none of their posts got more than a few likes and comments, so there were more than a few suspicions that the page likes were bought. (Didn't stop Teya from gloating on her personal page about having more likes than Amina, who she was fighting with at the time.) They hyped up their debut at Anime Midwest for a good long while and then this happened, and we never heard from them again. I guess Teya's hoping it'll be different this time around.

Here's something I'd like to hear your thoughts on - the idea of using the masquerade/skit part of anime convention cosplay contests to promote your idol group. Is it good exposure? Does it only make sense if your group is cosplaying characters? I thought it was an interesting jump when Stellure started putting themselves in cosplay contests instead of releasing PVs, since they're basically cosplaying characters they made themselves. But it's been something that other cosplay dance groups have started doing too. Is it an acceptable way to promote yourself, or should they be pushing for idol competitions where non-cosplaying idols can join? How DO you get exposure as a group anyway?

>> No.10091779

There’s a lot to inbox here.

>idea of using the masquerade/skit part of anime convention cosplay contests to promote your idol group
>Does it only make sense if your group is cosplaying characters?
For me this highly depends on whether or not they’re a cosplay group or a “real” group. If they are a cosplay/idolsona group then yes, that’s the only acceptable time do enter masquerade/skit contests. If it’s a “real” group, I don’t think it’s smart. You’re not masquerading as someone else. You’re you.

>when Stellure started putting themselves in cosplay contests instead of releasing PVs, since they're basically cosplaying characters they made themselves
While I think it’s okay to focus on performing than releasing songs & MVs (plenty of underground idols do this), I consider Stellure a special case. Their songs are totally based around who’s going to be at a con, not the group as a whole, which is why we almost never see the whole group together at one time. They’d also have to begin production (costumes, music, etc) months in advance, not weeks, should they want to do videos more. I think they realized that halfway in.

>something that other cosplay dance groups have started doing too.
With cosplay dance groups I feel like it’s okay to do. Much like vocaloid, they’re cosplaying well known characters and are more or less bringing them to life, especially when they sing and are good and match the characters.

>Is it an acceptable way to promote yourself, or should they be pushing for idol competitions where non-cosplaying idols can join?
Like I said, it depends. If they cosplay, yes but they can also push for non-cosplay competitions since they are basically crossing the threshold. Now if they aren’t a cosplay group, then by all means do not enter masquerades/skit contests. Just stick to non-cosplay competitions.

Be hella active online and in person. Go to cons, do hallway lives, make business cards if you have to. Online, post content. Covers, bts, fun days, make up games to post online, have a Facebook, Twitter, instagram(s). When you’ve got some traction, contact news outlets that specialize in idols and idol news. A lot of groups only do one or the other and only recently I’ve seen people promoting online and in real life.

Also a lot of drama about her in the Minnesota con community. Any girl in Minnesota hoping to perform at cons should distance themselves from Teya. The concept of this is so funny because it’s not like you’re actually getting anything out of it besides bad characters and a shitty song. They don’t create anything, someone else’s name is attached as a creator, they still have to find a use for the “idols.” And then if you win and it goes nowhere then it’s just an empty prize.

>> No.10095118

>>10094970
I used to do VA/cover project stuff on youtube, unrelated to idols, but similar enough of a concept that people who have a following get picked more often in that community too. Having helped on enough of those projects, there’s a lot of reasons people with followings get picked more often. There is the obvious of picking people with a following lets you benefit from that following. I’ve seen superior auditions lose out to somebody with more of a following, but taking somebody without a following is also a gamble as they’re more likely to flake. If they have an established following they’re more likely to be reliable. Giving people a part and not getting lines is really common.
People with followings also tend to be way better in auditions then they are in lines. Their audition will be great and the project lines will suck. They try their absolute best in audition with voice and emoting, and have the benefit of knowing how to edit their audio. They stop trying when they have the role. A lot of the unknown people that audition for these projects don’t even know how to make their lines into an MP3, and that’s indicative of the overall quality of their audition. “The noise won’t be in there if I get a part,” “please excuse my dog barking,” “I know I was off-key there,” vs. the audition of somebody who has done this before. Unknowns send in recordings from their cameras a lot. You give them a role and they’ve always got technical issues, because they do not know what they’re doing.
Alternatively in people with followings, the audition lines they were given were solid, but the project lines suck when the VA has no direction, and isn’t allowed to change anything (I don’t think VAs should have extensive creative control, but if the material sucks and they can’t change it, they’re doing their best with what they’ve got).
There's a lot of reasons to pick people with followings.

Here's the thing. People can definitely change and become better, everyone's said some bad stuff in the past before we knew better. Bringing up old drama about someone who's changed into a better person is petty and useless. But, bringing up old drama for someone who hasn't changed at all is just providing context. Since Teya's restarting her idol activities but hasn't actually become a decent person at all, it's important to keep her past in perspective because there's no reason to expect anything to go differently this time.

Of all this talk about Teya, I have one question. Everyone brings up the things she’s done in the past which isn’t inherently wrong. However, there has been no proof of her being better or the same. Yeah and Teya sure isn’t Dakota. Dakota who was completely homophobic, bitchy and bought followers was able to still have an extremely short lived career because as bad as her shoops were she was still “saleable”. Teya is a mediocre weeb whose only virtues is being a decent dancer. I would rather support someone with a good genuine personality and dedicated to improving. Teya hasn’t improved her personality, singing, Japanese or looks(makeup and whatnot) despite being active for almost 10 years now. If she did a big apology and admitted to fucking up I would have a completely different perspective. Instead she goes from group to group in Minnesota hoping nobody knows how toxic she is. Idols are 75% personality. Nobody wants to support a royal bitter bitch. If she wants to be a shit person she needs to just pursue professional dancing instead.

Teya recently has been fishing on twitter for kissbee to make an American sister group presumably in Minnesota (lmao) like Seishun Gakuin did with AllySally which would give her a bunch of power. This is something people should be aware of and isn’t ~V-vendetta!!!1~

You've made some really good points here but I also want point out some other things.
I highly doubt that every single "nobody" who auditioned had noise or dogs barking in the bg of their audition.
We can't deny that choosing people with popularity can be a smart move, but when it appears to be the only driving force in choosing each member, it starts to make the project feel disingenuous in a sense. I say that because as of now, the only good voice was the Australian one. It really seems like popular people were picked regardless of whether or not their voice fit the character.
Amelie, Caliope, and Hitomi were the worst in my opinion.

The only girl performing is in the middle, in the back, and you can hardly see her face. Even though her movements are a bit weaker and floatier than the rest of the group, I still think she's the best one there because there's enthusiasm on her face. I'm honestly not sure how to explain it concisely. I'm just a lurker in these threads, but I danced all throughout my school years and performance was something my coaches drilled into our heads. You have to make your expressions dynamic but in tune to what you're doing, not just randomly making faces. Say you raise your hands? Widen your eyes, do an open mouth smile, but don't keep that face for longer than a few seconds. Going on to the ground? Make sure your head is held up, but try a demure expression or a show of mouthing the lyrics.

The short haired girl (Aoki?) has good expressions in the beginning. A little over the top, but I think that's acceptable in idol dances. And too much performance is better than none.

I'm trying to find a few dances that showcase this well, but the ones that come to mind are all high energy and it's easier to perform more with high energy dances.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljT5WJJLiSY
This is a dance that is higher energy, but their mood feels more stoic (like I believe the first dance was going for). They aren't over the top smiling all over the place, but they (the girl in blue especially) changes expressions every few movements and in time with what they're doing. Sorry, I know I should find a slower dance, but I can't think of many at the moment that show the face clearly.

The take away is to make sure your face shows you're having as much fun as your body. Humans instinctively mirror each other and the energy that good facial expressions give off will make your entire performance look better.
