They didn't really have a choice. They were cramped for space at the ren center to begin with, and because of rules changing they were running into issues with loading in the equipment to the point where it's impossible. In order to keep it open 24 hrs in cobo the cost would require a huge increase in badge prices that people would definitely not accept. It sucks that it'll be closed for 8 hrs every night but was just not another option from what I heard

I've heard the same thing, and that they're increasing the stage size for tournaments. I guess we'll see. As long as they have that nice dim lighting I'll be happy. I just hope that because it's no longer 24 hours, it's not jam-packed with smelly weebs (anymore than usual) trying to get their games in, but I'm not counting on it.

Who the hell is in charge of panels? Are they aware that it's not ok to give panelists warning less than a month in advance? We have to make sure our schedules are free (I mean just fuck photoshoot scheduling right), decide if we're really going, get prize support purchased based on what gets approved, and practicing. Everything is written but there's so much more behind getting ready and I'm pretty sure the staff gives no shits about panelists as a whole. I can see why so many friends refuse to do this con, there's no respect.

Hardly no anime cons in the entire US has paid full time staff. Youmacon might have 3 at most. Your $75 pass barely pays for overhead to have the con takes place at all. It costs hundreds of thousands to rent a venue, bring in the AV, and have shit tons of stuff around the con. You then have to pay contractors hundreds of thousands to put it all together because no one is going to do professional work for free. You then top it off with taxes up the ass.

AX, at even 125k, has under 20 paid staff to put that all together and over 3000 volunteers.

PAX when does the same shit of a couple dozen in charge of all the shows. They do pay volunteers mininum wage but then they're on their own for a hotel room. They have thousands who put up with that shit even when it's owned by a billion dollar corporation.

Piss off in not know how this shit works and be grateful that someone is bothering to do it for free.

So because they rent out a venue, they're allowed to screw over panelists and volunteers? Because that's what they're doing. There's absolutely, ABSOLUTELY no reason for panels to not be confirmed two fucking weeks before the con. It means Youma is, as it is every year, still late on putting together their schedule. And there's no reason for it, not when bigger and smaller cons alike can release the schedule a month in advance AND give the panelists, you know, the people who are giving their time to make up half of the con's programming, enough notice to actually put their panels together.

This is hardly a high standard to hold Youma to. The con isn't new, there's no reason that every single year they're doing all of this shit last minute. Was it last year or the year before where they didn't hand out schedules and booklets until Friday, so no one knew when or where any events or panels were? Or when they didn't print enough and ran out of them? Or when it was SO last minute that the schedule was printed on shitty computer paper with too small text, like someone had made it the night before (because they probably did)? Was that all the same year or has this been a pattern, I can't remember.
Regardless, the people in charge of programming and panels need a fire lit under their ass or to change everyone out completely. It's sad that I've just learned to expect this from my local con. I want better, I especially want better for how much they keep creeping up pass prices each year, and that's not wrong of me or anyone else.

Due to,renovations at the rencen loading docks can not support bigger trucks which the game company needs to transport their stuff. As a bit of a last minute thing the moved it over to cobo which they could not find a larger room for the same price so not only is the room smaller but they can not staff it 24/7. Apparently they have been talking about moving it there for a while where they have a super large game room with more shit so they are also going to see how this goes for next year.

This is only my first year doing cons, but I've been doing ridiculously well at the cons I've attended so far. Far exceeded all my expectations. From asking around at ACen I made well over 3x the average for everyone else. So I'm cautiously optimistic I guess? I'm coming from another midwest state, so I'm not terribly far but it's definitely a decent drive (~6h or so).
Any advice for the AA?

There is an IHOP at the Millender Center, which is the building across the streat from the rencen. The building is connected to the walk way located to the left of the second floor of the rencen where the people mover station is. Dpendon on how many people are interested, I may resever a table already under the name "Moot". Otherwise I will be waiting at about 2pm for whoever wants to show up.

Maid Cafe will never be good (as it's overseen by AA head and will allow no good changes), DHs and co-con-chairs are long time friends of runner. Pretty much every department has been in some way dipping into the pockets of the convention, con would rather have friends then be profitable.
Announces guests after pre-reg is closed CONSISTENTLY, even though that's a big pull for people? But why start anything in advance, right?
RenCen likely didn't think Youmacon would last this long when signing contract, so while not hostile, not necessarily accommodating, since they know their hotel will book up from the con regardless of where it is without the perks they gave originally.
Guest Relations basically just parties with guests, makes sure they're inebriated, often when working.
It's not going to change.

The rave had plenty of people compared to last year at a given hour. It wasn't until 2am (3am w/o DST) that the crowd died down. There were at lot more females this year that stayed at the rave. I do agree that the music was not to the Youmacon liking since it was drum and bass compared to chiptunes/nerd electronic. Overall I think the rave was successful if you don't use the anime beach party DJs as your reference point.

This was the first con that I went too and I enjoyed it. Bought five canvas posters of various anime and a mouse pad of saber, aIso caught some pretty cool panels by a guy named Paul. I'll probably attend next year too, but now I'm thinking of flying out to other big cons. I tried the sticky post, but that's just cosplay tutorial help. I think a big part too is that the main entrance to the con hall was closed and no one knows how to get up aside from the elevators which where blocked for hotel guests. Stairs on the bottom level,needed a GM staff key so going up was impossible to go up.

I skip pretty much all the panels and just day-drink, then we do a room party at night.

If anything, come check it out and look around, there are very few areas where they get anal about badges (mostly the free food and beer room) if you dig it, stick around, if it's not for you, all it cost you was gas.

But I can tell you I was 100% in your shoes a few years ago with like, how aggressively horny that con's reputation was, but I just went and checked it out, people were pretty cool. I like it.

Also there is free beer and food with your badge, and an entire floor of just ridiculous room parties.
