Here's a few. My personal tips are 1. put you shrine somewhere small, like on top of an end table or a shelf, 2. use decorations and filler items like you would in an itabag, and 3. take your picture from an angle that flatters your flat merch.

Thank you! Okay, here’s my Josuke bag, I finally had the time to line up all of my new merch but I’m not super satisfied with the layout. I also have some more official merch that I plan to buy soon so I might keep one side for that and the other side for fan merch.

In the meantime, what should I fix? Should I remove any of these? I also usually just stick the plushies into the fabric bag on the sides while I use them, should I pin them to the outside of the bag instead?

Take off the keyrings first off, and maybe get a smaller version of the plush if they make one? I think the bag would look quite cute with a plush and it would take up a lot of space since it looks pretty bare here. I think more merch would be my main recommendation though.

I love browsing around on here and find these cute bags hella cute.
I want to make one for my wife as a nice christmas gift in secret, with her favorite character Samekichi(Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea) as the focus, but I'm having difficulty finding merchandise of the character.
So the question I have is if it would still be cute to create a bunch of perler bead things of him and cover the panel of the bag with those.
Her smile is super important for me to see this year.

You could do that, but I'm not sure I'd do that for the whole bag. I'd suggest taking a look at the FAQ as it has a section on characters with no merch, as well as links to places you can get buttons/acrylic charms done. Since there's still quite awhile until Christmas, you have time to get some more polished things together.

No actually, I found a thick craft fabric at a store I went to at some point, and thought "Oh that looks big enough. Maybe." It worked perfectly in my opinion, I really like the way it came out. I'm going to strip it and sand/stain the wood with a redwood or cherry, depending on the shades, hopefully it'll come out cleaner afterwards. Long time no see, SB69 anon watered my crops so I’m happy to share my updated bags! Still semi-working things around as I see changes I need to make but otherwise I’ve finally had the time to finish things.

To pose a question, do y’all try to attend meetups at cons? And/or, how do you decide which bag(s) to bring? I’m terrified of losing any merch that’s on the outside of my bags so I usually just bring my backpack and use it as an overall bag during cons. A friend of mine showed up to a meet with like six bags and it seems a little like overkill, but do you think it’s okay if you want to show off your collections? I suppose I’m just wondering what preferences y’all have.

It’s not always a case of bandwagon, sometimes just financial need. With a fandom like in the pic it should sell fast. So bandwaggoners aside, isn’t it possible to just lose interest in something and want to get rid of it?
I mean I’ve seen a couple of instances where people just aren’t happy with their bags anymore, not because it’s not the latest newest fotm anime or whatever but because it just doesn’t bring them joy anymore. This hobby can really wear you down imo with the hidden competition of having the best bag/most merch/biggest shrine or relying too much on buying things for brief happiness.

Fucking this. I've been seeing this a lot within the last couple of months lately and I can see why the burnout for it came so quick for some people.

>> No.9980971

That's true, I still think if that's the case the person should sell the bag and the merch separately, not only because most people probably just want one or the other but because it encourages people actually doing original designs.
>>9980701
Oh totally, most of the time it's bandwagoners is my point though, hence why most of these bags are things like idol anime or flavor of the month shows.
>>9980755
Is BNHA stuff even worth that much? I don't watch it let alone look at merch for it so I would't know.
>>9980769
Doesn't surprise me at all, obviously not all but a lot of idolfags jump onto the latest idol game just because the characters are cute and then dump it within a few months.
>>9980926
Yeah I hate that, it's really not a competition but a lot of really hardcore people who are into series with a shit ton of merch kind of get that in people's heads whether by intention or not when in reality itabagging is about appreciating your character and not racing to be better than anyone else. It's why people should think pretty hard about if they're going to stay in the fandom they're doing a bag of for a while or if they're just going to move onto something else a couple months later.

>> No.9980975

The lot I saw specifically was at least 250+ pieces of merch, and I don't remember if it included the bags or not, so I think the price was justifiable honestly. Not to mention I've seen people sell solo pieces of the most popular boys for 50+, if it's a rarer piece.

In the same position right now. I wanna sell off one of my bags because of a financial change and lack of interest in the character. I really liked them to begin with enough to drop a few hundred on merch enough, but over the past few months I feel like I've made a mistake and I shouldn't have done it.

I try to remember what made me love them, but I realize my interpretation of them was wrong and it's my own fault for not comprehending their character properly. I feel like an idiot don't make the same mistake as me

I do this a whole lot. I have serious hoarding tendencies (like the show "Hoarders" level) so I have to constantly keep myself in check. If I come across something that I used to love that I don't anymore, I either sell it or just donate it/give it away. I hate clutter and having something that brings me no emotional support. I'm always worried I'll convince myself to hoard bags and merch so I keep my collection low and focused on one thing at a time.

Some people also enjoy collecting & making the bags more than showing it off for a long time. Maybe just take it to a few cons & then work on something new. Defeats the point of having a bag or a shrine imho, but I doubt the merch companies give a shit as long as they get money.

>> No.9981785

I'm the same! I have serious hoarding tendencies too and have to do yearly purges just to make sure my place doesn't get too out of control. The fact that my husbando's shrine has made it through all these purges just shows how long and how much I've loved this character.

Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few people who only got into this hobby simply because I've loved and had merch of my husbando for more then a decade now and it'd be a nice way to have a portable shrine for him. I know a lot of people have different reasons for joining itabagging, but it feels like the spirit of it somehow got lost when the community grew too big too fast.

Luckily I didn't fall into the bigger is better trap and didn't feel the need to get super competitive like everyone else has been mentioning. Sure I've bought more merch in the last two years then I've had in the past decade, but that's only because the series I'm bagging for just had their anniversary.

Are you working on your bag? Is it your first bag or is it your nth? Are you still gathering merch or waiting for them? Are you facing any roadblocks?
Tell me a little about your bags and your experience in making them, anons.

>> No.9981882

>Are you working on your bag?
Technically speaking, I'm working on four. They're all in different states of progress and I'm mostly focused on one at a time.
>Is it your first bag or is it your nth?
I do have one (mostly) complete bag. That one has a few spots that I could fill if I get the urge. But I'm waiting until I've finished a few of my WIPs
>Are you still gathering merch or waiting for them?
For the most part, I'm done. There's one character who gets an insane amount of merch for super cheap and I can't seem to stop buying cheap lots. I guess I'll just have to frame some stuff once my bag is full and make a proper shrine.
>Are you facing any roadblocks?
I'm very very picky about my base bags. One of my characters has an impossible image color, and the others I know EXACTLY what I want, but it either doesn't exist in reality or it's always out of stock. I can sew, but finding the actual time and motivation to sit down and do so is hard. I'm trying to set a goal for actual conventions to force me to just do it.

9981931

>Are you working on your bag?
I've got two going right now, but one has more priority over the other since I want to be able to take it to two conventions in the upcoming months. The second bag is something I'm in no big hurry to finish. I've loved that character for twenty years at this point, so there's no danger of losing interest while I work on the other bag.

>Is it your first bag or is it your nth?
These are both my first. I'd like to do more in the future if these turn out well.

>Are you still gathering merch or waiting for them?
One bag will always have merch available, so I'm still gathering stuff as I find pieces I like. I might be done with my current bag but I need to wait for everything to come in first. I managed to find a couple of rare wishlist items yesterday (and probably overpaid for them, but oh well), so I'm excited to see how it looks when it all comes together. The last step on my checklist is getting a custom fabric printed for my insert since I couldn't find one along the lines of what I wanted.

>Are you facing any roadblocks?
Like the above anon, I'm pretty picky about my base bags and finding one that I liked enough to use was an ordeal. I wanted a navy bag since it was a nice neutral color for the two characters I'm using in my bag. Everything was either too light and frilly -- I'm bagging for a shonen anime, I don't need pastels and bows -- or didn't fit the type of bag I had in mind. Luckily, I inadvertently came across a post on the Facebook group that linked to a bag on Taobao I really liked. (Pic related.) I've not bought anything from Taobao before, so fingers crossed I did everything correctly.

Bag #2 is an OC bag I'm ashamed to say. But I've put the most money time and elbow grease into it since its for my babes. That said getting stuff to fill it and not look like shit is a slow process. I don't want just anyone's art for my characters. Bag 4 is having the worst time so far. The base Bag was a gift from my boyfriend but it's a preorder that's taken nearly 4 months to get a tracking number and the tracking doesn't work. Its also for an indie game so good merch of my best boy is nearly non existent. I'm close to just buying a smaller bag and giving up having a proper loving shrine, but that wouldn't be right.

If you guys have multiple bags as well, would you mind sharing which specific bags you're using? I have a wego bag, a BlueRobo bag then a kickstarter bag preorder that should be done by October. Was wondering if anyone else was suffering in preorder hell with me.

My first is for my husbando that I've been collecting merch for for 8 years now, and I'll probably never stop; my second is my son and I've struggled with collecting merch since his game came out because apparently it's still massively popular enough to have massive character tax. I'm waiting on a few pieces+his bags to come in to establish a final layout, but there's some specific pieces of merch I want dupes of that will probably put the completion of his bag behind schedule. There's nothing inherently wrong with fanmade stuff if there's not anything for you character. If its like fallout 1 or 2 you're most likely shit out of luck, but 3 and 4 have such large fanbases you can def find someone willing to make you something.

How picky are you when buying merch for your itabags? Has there been times you'll avoid bundles because a couple of the items are ugly/don't go with your bag? Or are you someone who wants to own at least 1 piece of all the merch of that character?

I personally started wanting to get 1 of everything for my itabag, but I've seen a lot of merch that I don't like aesthetically for my bag so I've started to get really picky. Just curious if there are others like me.

>> No.9986246

It depends on the character. There’s one fandom I’m a diehard for and am ready to put in the money to grab one of every piece of merch. But for another I have room to be pickier since it’s starting to get more merch variety. There are a couple pieces where the art or the way it was made just feels a little off to me, so I’m not even bothering to touch it. My heart goes out to the baggers with so little official merch they don’t have much choice.

>How picky are you when buying merch for your itabags?
It depends. For maki-chan I'm picky because I have a very particular look in mind and there's a lot, but for Matthew Perry my goal is to have at least one of everything.

>> No.9986289

>>9986229
The only thing I’m super picky with is “chibi” merch because I really only like chibis that have the black dot eyes/simple eyes and not full blown anime eyes. Thankfully Nitotans exist now and are super popular, but for unpopular series or old series I’m stuck.

>> No.9986300

>>9986229
I don't like the chibi style that a lot of rubber straps have, so I avoid those. I prefer show accurate art if at all possible.

I also don't want any merch that's super tiny or overly large. I've bought lots that will have a charm that's 1cm x 2cm, and I don't even know what to do with that. But anything that's too big for my bag, I just pin to a board. Easy enough.

>> No.9986304

>>9986229
For me it really depends on which character. For characters with harder to find merch I'll take what I can get, even if the art is super same-y, but with franchises that have a metric fuckton of merch I'm a little pickier. BNHA specifically is what I'm the pickiest with, because they have a lot of merch that uses the same stock art from their character sheets or the same stock chibi art.

>> No.9986317

mhmm, BNHA stuff is all over the place so I'm very picky with the merch I'm buying. I really like the unique artwork that's been coming out though. I tend to ignore the pins and keychains that are literal screenshots from the anime.

I try to limit it to certain types of art. Typically avoiding default key visual arts or avoiding more than one piece that has the same art. Definitely prefer stuff where its a special design made for a limited run. For one of my sons he has to be either smiling or in a non-default outfit.

Same, I've mostly stuck with stuff I think looks the cutest like plush/nitotans or stuff with really nice art on it.

>>9986229
I'm pretty picky with my merch since I already have an idea in my head about what I want it to look like, having too many different kinds of merch can clash with eachother imo
Extra picky with my BNHA bag because theres so much merch but not all of it is very visually appealing, I avoid acrylic charms like the plague mostly because I'm paranoid about them snapping if I drop my bag or something,

>> No.9986430

I only have one character who I actively bag for, and they're one with very little official merch but quite a bit of fan merch. For the first couple years I bought literally every single thing I could get my hands on, because I figured that as the series aged out of it's flavor-of-the-month status the merch would stop getting produced and I wouldn't have the opportunity to buy anything ever again.

Happy to say that I was wrong, and I totally underestimated the stay power of dedicated thirsty fujoshi. He's still getting a steady stream of fan merch, and now I'm pickier about the things I buy.

I'm also a sucker for the look of cascading tiles of merch upon merch that all has the same art, though, which I realize isn't a lot of peoples' cup of tea.

Speaking of buying originals, here's that velour Zakkamart bag review I promised.

Site gives the window side's measurements as 35cm wide and 23 cm tall, but the actual window is only 19 cm tall. It's held closed by a strip of velcro, which is attached to an insert flap. The insert flap is about 33 cm wide and 18 cm tall to the velcro. It feels pretty secure. There's no zippers and the insert doesn't detach, so if you wanted to use it rather than making your own, you'd need to fold it and shimmy it back inside. It's a pain doing it without merch pinned to it, so I really can't imagine wanting to use it. The window also isn't very deep, and when I tried to put the only insert-like thing I had on hand inside, I couldn't get it completely flush with the edges.

Actual material of the bag is velour as expected, but most of the bag has a stiffer lining underneath the cloth. The frills and strap don't have that lining, so they're much more pliable. The whole thing is absurdly soft to the touch. The frilled flap doesn't have any clasp or magnet, so it literally just flops over the windowless size. You can flip it over the window as well, but it doesn't quite cover the edges of the window.

Inside is way more spacious than I expected, though only having two little pockets is a bit disappointing.

Overall, I'd give it a comfy/10. Can't wait to use it, though I need to wait a bit longer for winter decorations to start popping up again.

Why would it suddenly be okay if the bag's owner was a minor?
If you're so incapable of containing your lust for any character and and put horny merch in your itabag, you deserve public shaming. No one cares what you do in private, but the second you bring it into the public sphere, you're crossing the line. It's no different than mocking people in ahegao shirts.
If a teenager was doing either of those things, I'd be scorning their parents too for letting them buy that shit and not teaching their kids that it's not acceptable.

Can't you tell the difference between looking at or participating in sex acts vs looking at sexy content. Because man, how do you survive at cons where people are out there with their sexy cosplays and shit. Or even out on the street where you get weirdly sexual fashion ads every three steps. It's just a character's rear that's cropped around their booty. It has sexual connotations, sure, but hardly to the same level of ahegao.

The fact that the window is closer to the bottom than the top annoys the shit out of me. If it's going to be intentionally misaligned, the extra space is supposed to be at the bottom not the top. Basic art framing/mating 101: an extra inch at the bottom adds "weight" to the bottom of the peace and makes it appear balanced. It's fairly common to mat pieces that way.

An extra inch at the top just makes it weirdly top heavy.

Goddamn I feel like an idiot for asking this gulls, but I've tried looking around and can't find anything.

How the hell do you maneuver your safety pins through your items to pin them in place? My motor skills aren't the greatest, so I've been struggling to pin everything from the back without using pliers to bend the pin and fuck it all up. There's got to be a simpler way to pin stuff on this plastic canvas. What do? :<

>> No.9990773

Alright gulls, I feel stupid as hell for having to ask this, but here goes.

How the hell do you pin things through the back of your inserts and only manage to have a tiny bit of safety pin showing? My fine motor skills aren't exactly refined, so I've been having trouble pinning my stuff without using pliers and puckering the fabric/plastic canvas I'm using for my insert. It looks shitty, I've pricked my fingers way too much, and I know there's a better way to do this. A lot of the bags posted here look so clean and I have no idea how they manage it. :<

>> No.9990776

>>9990773
I think if you were using curved safety pins it might work better, though I haven't used them myself. Honestly, though, I think it's just easier to sew everything down when you're using plastic canvas. The only thing I used safety pins for were my rosettes.

>> No.9990832

>>9990773
It takes a lot of time and practice desu. I tend to take around 1.5-2 hours just pinning a bag together. I like using bigger safety pins rather than tiny ones though, so maybe that will help you? It's just easier to open and close them imo.
What I usually do when attaching charms with lobster clasps is mark where I want the pin to go through, poke it through from the back from a vertical angle and close it, so that all you see is a vertical line of the pin. Then I take the clasp, open it up, and hook it through the gap between the pin and the fabric.

I hope this helps even though I'm pretty bad at explaining things. You can certainly just sew things down too like >>9990776 said. It's not as easy to move things around of course, but if you're happy with a layout and don't plan to change it, go for it.
