As a question for discussion, what approach do you guys take to preserving lolita history? Do you:
>collect GLBs and other printed materials?
>lovingly restore old pieces?
>save digital stuff like blogs and photos
>not care at about that at all?
I really like the idea of having carefully curated archives of things, and I think lolita is a wonderful opportunity for that. Right now I'm trying to finish up my magazine collection, but I'm curious about what other gulls do. I figured oldschoolers are more likely to appreciate that kind of thing, I guess?

>> No.9962776

All of the above? lol. I actually just started collecting GLBs recently even though I've been a lolita for 8 years...something about them going out of print kinda freaked me out and suddenly I feel compelled to collect all of them (or at least the earlier ones because I'm an oldschooler) before they are all gone. I also have a few books about lolita, and a groaning photo folder on my computer titled "lolita inspiration" which is mostly oldschool as well.

Oh, and someone posted a link to a bunch of old FruiTs scans in a different thread recently, and I've slowly been going through and saving all the images of cute 90s proto-lolitas I can find, if anyone would like to see some of those.

I like restoring old pieces that I find. Most of them honestly just need a good wash, maybe some buttons resewn/threads clipped, maybe a few seam stitches. I'm honestly amazed that girls who are into an expensive fashion don't wash their clothing... I've gotten some really great deals on "stained" items (not from wunderwelt/etc, but from girls themselves) that come clean in a couple washes. I literally just toss them in a garment bag and throw them in the washing machine and all is new.

Either way, it really makes me feel happy to restore these things and wear them. Especially since I'm not excited at all about new releases, "modern lolita"

I'd say 1999-2005 for old school. I love the more simplistic designs that focused on fabrics, lace and cuts rather than modern day dresses which gear towards intricate prints and layering of ruffles and accessories. Pic related is the pinnacle of lolita to me.

I'd have to agree with the other anons, but maybe a bit earlier, 1997-2006 was def the Lolita Renaissance. I like prints, but a lot of the earlier dresses had amazing cuts and looked very cute and more realistically doll like with a touch of early 2000s tacky which makes my heart flutter. I feel like modern lolita really misses the mark of being intentially frumpy and cute because it's focused on how much of a "princess" you look with perfect poofs, bows, and matching everything.

Old school has a charm to it because it's not perfect. Modern brands strive to make everything "perfect" now and keep missing the mark really badly (See post-2012-AP, where everything looks the same with different shitty prints to keep up with fast fashion and taobao)

I wish prints would die off for a little while, it might reset the fashion back into where it should be

This anon >>9965934 has already said almost exactly what I wanted to in terms of style. The demographic seems to have changed a huge amount too. It's hard to say this without sounding like an "elitist" or special snowflake, but you can just tell when someone isn't even vaguely alternative or fashionable and only likes lolita because it's a "kawaii trendy Nipponese harajuku" or attention grabbing. You know easily over half of those people would never touch any kind of non-weeby or sanitized altfashion and even less would accept any of the values that came with it. Everything seems to be streamlined to be as clean, pretty, and "palatable" as possible while simultaneously being harder to wear daily. Everything but the gothiest goth has lost all of it's edge. A huge part of it generational I know, but it takes two seconds to the see the difference between early GLB and modern brand ads use of models, poses, and airbrushing. I'm not saying it's even vaguely normie approved, but it does feel like almost everything that made it alternative fashion has been taken away except for the poof and cuteness. I still love Meta, some IW, and gothic brands, but I can't even get into Baby's classical series.

Getting on topic, honestly I think the best time to be an old school western lolita would be when OTT sweet was queen. Brand was much easier to come by compared to the early 2000s and all the pieces I liked were considered "boring, plain, or borderline ita." In other words there was way less competition, prices were down, and there were just way less people who knew about the fashion in general. Also thinking about it the same way you would antique clothing, every year that passes the less pristine or even wearable lolita items will be left. Even if the revival trend dies quickly the prices are only going to go up from here.

You both make some very interesting and eye-opening points! Previously I wasn't able to put my finger on why I like old school so much, but thanks to >>9965934 I now understand that old school tends to look more doll-like thanks to its frumpiness, which I love.

I also agree that the demographic has changed, although I can only really talk about lolita from 2013-present. Everything now is about being a perfect princess uwu, and a lot of lolitas are more normie. >>9966111 explains it better when they talk about how a lot of lolitas nowadays aren't
>even vaguely alternative or fashionable
and lolita is more about being
>clean, pretty, and "palatable" as possible while simultaneously being harder to wear daily
Hit the nail on the head.

>> No.9967115

>>9966471
I think lolita and normie fashion are much closer together as well with the resurgence of interest in vintage, rockabilly and more girly mainstream fashions. While lolita is clearly not any of those things, normies now recognise the shape and idea of having a petticoat more readily, lace fabric and trim are things that adult women actually wear again, tights come in colours other than black, navy, mid tone brown and white, rounder peter pan collars are seen in mainstream fast fashion and being interested in cutesy things that would have been considered children's interests previously (see: unicorns, pugs, comic books, bronies) is more commonly seen. So feminine, cutesy fashion is more accessible and less outside the mainstream in Western countries compared to the 90s and early 00s

>> No.9967334

>>9967115
This is so true. I simultaneously love and hate that kawaii has become so mainstream. I love it because everything is so accessible now, and people are at least aware of the fashion, plus I love lolita and want it to grow. On the other hand I can't stand it being cool now because of the "what were we thinking" fad that the fashion world and media like to push every decade.
In the early 2000s 80s and 90s fashion was considered tacky. Now people cringe at 2000s fashion. I just don't want to see lolita and kawaii fashion go through this bullshit cycle and get spit out on the other end. I know I have and always will love lolita. I was not fashionable or in before and I will not be in the future, but the difference is that instead of just wearing weird clothes it will be seen as wearing extremey outdated clothes, and not in a cool old school lolita way.

A lot of Western lolitas these days are doing it as a trend that is an extension of the con scene. When they are thirty they will be "cringing" at it to pretend they are all normal now.

The best I can hope is that maybe lolita goes the way of the goth in the west and transcends generations. I know it's already like that in Japan.

This so much. I remember falling in love with lolita over mainstream fashion precisely because of all the different cuts and sewn details that made each dress special. I used to say it was much better, because mainstream fashion is just the same t-shirt with a different print. Now AP is just same dress different day.

At least they still have a bunch of under the radar solids where they experiment.

I actually made up my own names for these. Top is the basic high waist, because it always has few and small details like thin straps, bit of lace at the top, nothing else much going on . I don't get this mentality. AP releases new shit like every single week, of course at some point they're going to have to recycle cuts. Even in a time earlier than anon is referencing they did. You can only do so many patterns before it loses what makes it lolita, and certain cuts showcase certain types of prints better than others. Notice with the sack cuts a lot of them are all over prints with not a ton of detail in them (holy lantern, wrapping ribbon, halloween treats)

I love old school and it's half of my wardrobe but I hate these threads because all that happens is it turns into a huge circle jerk shitting on styles you don't like. It's not too far-fetched to think that people like that aren't interested in new brand. I'm not saying any of that is right or wrong btw. >use their personal taste in design choices to say something is bad quality
Yeah, I can see that. Old-school for me is really heavy and frumpy, that's what I like about it. Now the materials are more flowy and lighter, chiffon is everywhere etc. Not saying it's worse, but I kinda think it looks a bit cheaper. Just a personal preference tho.
So few questions to change the mood a bit:
What is your favourite old-school piece?
What brand aesthetic do you like the most?
And a bit controversial, have you considered replicating a piece you know you have no chance of getting?

Damn anon, did you accidentally put salt in your tea instead of sugar? Here I pulled together a comparison of dresses from BTSSB in 2001 vs 2016. I pulled the pictures from the first few rows of lolibrary after I searched 'btssb op 2016', so there's no manipulation of the truth on my behalf. The lack of variety is pretty jarring in the 2016 row. While I do agree that oldschool threads can become a bit of a circlejerk about how 'the glory days are over' and 'lolita isn't as good as it used to be', the difference is undeniable.

But this seems to be a trend in /cgl/ generally. Atleast I have seen a lot whining about OTT, bad brand quality and shitty designs in other threads too. I agree old school anons can have a bit small point of view but I don't think all of this is unique to old school circles at all nowadays. Imo lolita is evolving and it makes everyone who has been abroad few years confused and nostalgic.

I don’t care about when the dress was released, I was trying to point out the difference in styling and overall look - frumpy and cute with all the imperfections vs 100% colormatched with no sense of personal style. I haven’t seen anyone coord these new items in a way that would resemble my old school examples either. I think you might be the only one bothered by the release date. Why are you so personally affected by this?

Sugar Bouquet, just looking at it makes me feel really happy for some reason. But I like a lot of different florals, doesn't matter if it's sweeter like pic related or "grandma couch."
>What brand aesthetic do you like the most?
Probably Innocent World with Baby in a close second
>And a bit controversial, have you considered replicating a piece you know you have no chance of getting?
I haven't directly replicated anything but I've made several old-school inspired dresses.

I want more bulky antique doll-inspired pieces.

From what I own, its the 2002 Rose Gobelin print op from angelic pretty, it was one of my dream dresses. In general, it's the Metamorphose bear rucksack.

>What brand aesthetic do you like the most?
Metamorphose and cornet

>And a bit controversial, have you considered replicating a piece you know you have no chance of getting?
Yes but I don't have the sewing skills for it nor I know a good enough seamstress in my area

I did with the moitie nun op, but I dont have the skills for it and instead of commissioning I'd rather wait and see if it ever shows up. I also want to sew an old usakumya but the pattern for it was on GLB so I think it's fair game

Value judgements aside, it's actually fun to see original old school pics next to new old school or new lolita, really gives you a feel for changes and similarities in the progression of the style.

I just impulsively bought a head dress. I'm not a stranger to old school Lolita, but I've never tried on a headdress before. I've never even seen one in person before. Does anyone here actually wear old school? Can anyone give me some tips for wearing a head dress (and looking good while doing it)? I have my doubts about being able to pull the look off.

>> No.9993329

>>9993322
I wear them more than any other head accessory. They look best with your hair left down and styled simply, with a center part, either straight or some nice curls. Put it on top of your head, put the ribbons behind your ears (this helps keep it in place) and tie under your chin.

>> No.9993341

>>9993329
I guess something that's really worrying me is that I was blessed with baby fine hair. I know that it's essentially just a thick headband, so in theory if I can wear a headband I can wear a head dress, but with all the lace it might overwhelm my bald ass head.

Is there a particular reason you wear them more than other things?

>> No.9993342

>>9993322
If it doesn't have clips of any kind you can stitch in some at the sides to help hold it, or a hair comb. That gives you some freedom as to how far forward or back you want to place it.

I think everyone wears rectangle headdresses a little bit differently. I think tying them under the chin is the most common in old school, particularly old school sweet, but I favor the tie behind my head. That plus clips makes it stay better.

>> No.9993356

>>9993342
I like the clip idea. Especially if it turns out the ribbon ties don't suit my face.

>> No.9993357

I have very fine hair as well. Its thick, just straight and flat. That's one of the reasons I like headdresses, they look more balanced on hair with less volume than a big fluffy bow would. But the main reason I wear them is because I like them. I mostly only wear oldschool so it's just kinda my thing.

>> No.9994234

>>9993322
As other anons have mentioned I wear them either tied under my chin or on the back of my head. I also pin the ribbons with bobbypins so I don't have to tighten it too much and it stays on better. I find them comfy and basically only head accessory that doesn't give me headache. I wear them my (thin) hair down but sometimes I also do braids, looped braids, double buns or low or high ponytails. They are surprisingly versatile.
