There's no name for it. It just became a little bit trendy in Japan last year, so a lot of Japanese brands did something similar but they don't base their entire aesthetic on it.

High waisted will emphasize your waist and booty (extra boory for jeans like pic related), so it depends on what you define as "look best". I'm a plank but like low waisted/hip jeans instead of high because it emphasizes a flat stomach.

I just really want to know if people really do buy the $1000 Baby dresses secondhand. It seems like most of them just sit there forever.

I'm thinking of buying a lolita wedding dress for $800~ and I'm curious if there is actually a buyers market for it afterwards?

If not, I would just keep it and make OTT coords for it every couple of years but I'm just curious if people who buy those dresses usually pull the wear once and re-sell, or just attempt to but get stuck with a 1k dress.

They usually ship out within a few hours of confirming your payment, as long as it's within their business hours. Actually getting the invoice can take up to a few days though. A couple times I've had to email them asking if they've even got my order in stock, but once they have it they ship it out right away.

Here's a good stupid question for you gulls

Is there anyone here that uses a binder for Lolita/or cosplay, and if so, how well do they work? I'm looking into gc2b, I'm a high C in bra size, do you guys think that the binder would bring me down to at least a size B?

For lolita, you should honestly be fine wearing anything at that bust size. Binders tend to cause weird shapes that make some dresses sit funny. For cosplay a gc2b binder should work fine. Just remember to get a neutral colour if you're wearing something light so it doesn't show through.

Honestly, I have a bust of about 96 and I will wear a corset fairly loose under my dresses to make sure my boobs fit. It helps keep the shape in the bodice better than a binder and it isn't as intense of a bind (so you can wear it around much longer)

On a side note--
I bought a Baby dress and forgot to check the measurements. It said it was a 90cm max bust but I'm 96 and it fits with room to spare. Did the seller give me the wrong measurements because I thought Baby dresses were infamous for being too tight in the boobs

Same hair type, I wear bows on the back of my head when I do a half up style so it peeks and looks cute.

Tips for making your hair hold a curl: Sleep with damp hair so you'll wake up with frizzy messed up hair that has more body, then brush it (not too much) with a soft brush. To completely dry hair, apply mousse first and then a styling heat protection spray. Then curl (I do around 12 second curls) , then add strong hairspray moderately (if you put too much it looks like plastic hair). My curls last around 2 days like this even if I brush them out (I don't leave my hair without washing for more than that period of time but they could last longer).

And to answer >>9917646
Aside from peeking bloomers, bloomers are usually even less visible than petticoats (which you'd normally don't see, but on a staircase/elevator or sometimes when sitting down you'd definitely see a bit of them). It looks best when bloomers match your petti, because then it looks like a matching sea of ruffles.

On the other hand, if there's a very real chance of an upskirt and you want to clearly show you're wearing shorts, then wear very obvious shorts. Fetishists are weird, some of them probably mistake bloomers for fetish underwear, baka.

It adds some lumpy fabric underneath a flat skirt, and adds nothing noticeable to a skirt that already has a petticoat in between the bloomers and your skirt. The extra fabric gets added mid-thigh but what you really want is extra fabric near the knees, which is where the bloomer ends.

Don't rely on bloomers for poof unless they're attached to a petticoat. They provide warmth and cover your butt. Relying on them for poof is too stupid even for this thread, pls.

Which cut is most flattering for a plus size lolita?

If it helps I am more hourglass or pear shaped.
Also in general, there is a lot of talk about plus size lolitas needing to wear dresses that flatter them. Can someone post some examples of the types of dresses? Definitely the A-line, just waist cut on the left, assuming you have a defined waist and not a very prominent gut. Cupcake shapes like the right will make you look rounder than you actually are. But you need to take into account the fact that IW isn't cut to accommodate large busts, if you're above B cup you should tread with caution.

Look at bra specialty stores and stores like Dillards and Nordstrom. I wear 32DDD or 30G (though the latter is much harder to find even if it fits better) and that's how I get my bras. I especially utilize their sales - if you live anywhere near a Dillards hit them up on New Year's Day, the sales are crazy.

I don't own any seriously padded bras, but one that goes down to 30C that's a decent bit padded is Le Mystere's Infinite Possibilities Deep Plunge T-Shirt Bra - I own it in two colors and it's extremely comfy, gives me a bit of extra push up, and has convertable straps. I don't think you'd need a 28 necessarily as it's band runs tighter than most bras.

Cut is only one part of it, you need a dress that fits. And “fit” doesn’t mean squishing into it, it means your body bits are sitting in the right areas, the dress isn’t hiked up or bursting, and the skirt is poofy enough. There’s no point getting an A-line dress if it still boobloafs you.

Look for dresses that have adjustable straps so that you can move where the bust and waists sit, you need the extra length as your body is wider from front to back than the dress was intended for.

Having a waist to emphasise is going to make you look a lot less like marshmallow man. Look into corsets or body-shapers if you need them (if you want to wear elasticated skirts, they’re invaluable even for skinny girls because elasticated waistbands always result in muffin top), invest in a bra that lifts your boobs up, it will emphasise your waist even more (and prevents your boobs from sitting like two lumpy potatoes).

After you have your bodyshape sorted out, THEN look for an A-line dress, just-waist or low-waisted dress that emphasises your waist.

Empire-waist dresses can work for pear shapes, unfortunately what fatties absolutely need in an empire-waist dress is a flared skirt, and that’s rare. The few dresses known to actually have flared skirts on an empire waist are Misty Sky and Dream Sky, both are only 83cm. So practically speaking, it’s wisest to stay away from empire-waist dresses altogether unless you’re getting it custom-made.

Cardigans are helpful as well, they divide your body into three skinnier vertical blocks rather than one very wide one, but unfortunately it can be a bit of work to find the right cardigan in the right colour and length. I’d also suggest avoiding short sleeves that show off your bicep fat, just slightly longer sleeves work much better.

For examples of fatty girls in lolita, try older pics of bowsbeforeboyss (she lost weight recently). Drama aside, she dressed well.

Not really. Any Chinese I spoke to thinks it's either cool, or is indifferent about it. Cheonsam/qipoa is based on Western clothing anyways. Heck, I wear Hanfu and Haori casually.

But generally, it are Westeners, especially Americans who are caring. People from East-Asia generally think it's cool to wear their cultural clothes, and love it when people take interest (foreign or not). It's a positive thing there, as long as you're not mockingly trying to act like you're an Chinese and put chopsticks in your hair while making a fake accent, so to say. Just wear it as clothes is fine.

But then, cultural appropriation and racism aren't their most cared about topics anyways.

Seriously thank you for this. NAYRT, but damn the genuine suggestions are appreciated. I've hit the point in my 'road to health' where I hate wearing boring clothes all the time and I want to start dressing in a way that makes me happy.
That being said, I also don't want to spend a fortune on clothes that -hopefully- will be too large on me in a year. Are there any decent shops you suggest that offer custom sizing at affordable prices?(Up to $150 or so maybe?) I've been so afraid of ending up in the ita threads just because of my weight (and the time I accidentally bought a replica a few years back. Pic related) that I've shied away from looking. I really enjoy gothic and classic themes a lot more now that I'm a bit older.
I'm about 30lbs lighter than I was in this pic, I think? It was just a shot I snapped after it came in so I could see how it fit with the blouse, but every full outfit pic I have has other people in it and the cropping would just ruin the point.

Honestly, custom sizing is expensive, sad and kind of stupid when you know you’re paying money for something you’ll end up throwing out (you can try to sell it on but sometimes there’s just no buyers for that size, they don’t like the dress, etc, so it’s not certain you can sell it).

Check first if you fit some of the bigger brands — Metamorphose and Triple Fortune release fully shirred dresses that go pretty big. If you are a handful of inches under the max, then just aim for the dresses with shirred/adjustable shoulder straps. Lengthen the shoulder straps while fat, shorten when skinny, and you can keep the dress even after you lose weight. Take it to a tailor’s if you don’t like the way full shirring looks.

Then spend money on things like shapewear, fitted blouses, grooming and hair — these things don’t even have resale value, but you will “wear” them with every single outfit, so it’s far more worthwhile to make sure you look your best before you even touch a main piece, rather than to pay money for a main piece only to look like an ugly potato covered in fancy fabric.

If you’re so big you can’t really fit into any fully-shirred jsks, then honestly I’d say avoid lolita for a while. Even cheaper brands like Soufflesong or F+F still charge a hefty price for custom super-plus-sized dress. They’re worth it if you’re staying fat, but if you’re sure you’ll lose weight then it’s just paying a lot of money for a temporary outfit.

If you really need the kawaii, I’d suggest collecting accessories, things like ribbon or flower combs are easy to work into outfits, you don’t have to throw them out after you lose weight, and you will have a headstart with accessories when you finally lose enough weight to wear lolita.

Highly disagree with >>9920576. Don't go stretch out sheering. It all goes back to the "just because you can get it on doesn't mean it fits" thing. Not to mention you probably stretch out sheering, which kinda ruins the dress and unless you have a tailor professionally repair it, in which case value still drops. Beter change selling second hand custom sized clothes. Leaves happier buyers too. And maybe people with higher weight that wear a fitting dress for once.

I got some great custom sizing from Amastacia. Henrietta also offers it on pre-orders sometimes. Otherwise Surface Spell, but they are super slow so I don't recommend them until you are on the weight you want (might be too big once you get it, waiting for over a year now). Most custom sizing cost not that much extra (generally only 10-20 euro max), and the average TaoBao dress is around 80 euro, so if you use shopping service instead of resellers you should be fine with 150USD for each dress.

Please don't stretch out your dresses. Just because it can stretch to 110cm does not mean it fits a girl with 110cm... Also, it might differ with meta's new stuff, but even fully shirred meta honestly doesn't fit huge girls. I'm tall and have a 92 cm bust/70cm waist and I honestly wouldn't suggest it to girls much bigger than me bustwise. It just doesn't look great after a certain measurement, despite going a lot farther.

Most of the advice is written for someone who is already losing weight, that's why it leans towards not getting custom clothes. They're great but I've been there and had clothes arrive that no longer fit because in the months it took to get to me I've already gotten too small. Money wasted, seriously.

>> No.9920832

>>9920825
Cut, closeups of lace, print scaling and color, size are the main things you look out for. Replicas tend to have more faded/off color and off center prints, may exist in colors that the original dress didn't come in, cut and stitchwork is often off compared fo the original - usually bodice looks misshapen and tubey compared to the original, may exist in sizing the original didn't come in hence why fat lolitas usually buy them, lace is often different than the original though some replica makers do replicate brand lace, and usually if theres lace trim on the skirt replicas have it wider than the original.

>> No.9920837

>>9920825
When it comes to printed pieces, the easiest way to know is by the lace, if the dress has any: All replica prints have dodgy lace in one way or another, at least from what I've seen. The older replicas have non-matching lace, basically whatever tulle lace they had lying around (or raschel lace, if we're talking really old); newer ones use lace that imitates actual brand lace but it's always not gathered enough, if at all - This makes it obvious that they used less of it, which points to the corner-cutting nature of cheap ass replicas.
There are other ways to tell replicas apart like buttons, tailoring, fit, print or fabric quality... it depends on the piece, really. The more trained your eye becomes, the easier it is to tell replicas apart from genuine pieces.

Only partly related, but a dress with good pastern and good sizing do look good on bigger breast. The problem is many brands don't have the shape to accommodate bigger breast (most likely related to the fact Japanese are often flat, Chinese slightly less but still not comparable to white and dark skinned people), so you need to learn what brands do.

Like, just because it closes near the waist and breast doesn't mean it's cutted to accommodate breast. It needs some curve in front. Pattern is just as important as fit.

Usually when you have been in the fashion long enough you recognize brand details and brand photos over weird fakes. You can spot stolen stock photos and sometimes know which dresses can or cant fit plus size so if you see a larger you know it's fake.

If you are new though, you should always double check to be sure. You'll get the hang of it eventually.

Thank you guys for all of the input, and you all have awesome points. I'll look into the brands you've suggested, but like you've mentioned, I'm not about to go around destroying the shirring on a dress. I've seen how it looks. Don't need to feel it, too, lol.
I'll definitely look into shapewear, and I figure maybe I can start with some decent wigs and possibly looking into Mori since the sizes of clothes can be forgiving as you lose weight (it seems?). I like the idea of building up a bit of an accessory cabinet to keep eyes on the prize without feeling like I'm not moving. Like little motivators.
Thank you so much for the tips! It helps a lot lot, honestly, because I've always wanted to get more into the fashions I love and into cosplay, but I've always been too self conscious. I feel like I actually have a chance now and that is a huge motivator to keep going, superficial as it seems.

Asked this in the general but no one answered, so maybe it's better for here.

How accurate are the bust sizes on VM OPs? I only have ever worn and own a skirt and a JSK from VM. I do fit the JSK which is listed at 89/67 and I'm 86/66, so it looks like it isn't a no-go if it's close, but I'm not sure how consistent that it across their pieces. I'm interested in the new Rococo Bouquet OP that is listed at 87 but I'm concerned at 86 that it might not fit.

And if people aren't too sure...if I email VM with my best Google Translate do you think they'll answer?

Metamorphose throws up some print blouses once in a while, if yours looks similar in aesthetic to these then you’re probably fine with them (pic is a blouse + skirt coord). You might want to make use of the coord help thread to get suggestions on what to wear with them.

Print blouses are mainly unpopular because they can be difficult to coord with, girls usually use print jsks as the focal point of their coord, and a print blouse competes with that for attention. Much easier to own a few plain solid blouses that can be worn between different jsks, rather than having to coord around the blouse as a focal point each time.

I am just starting out in the fashion and looking at taobao and aliexpress brands (I've only bought 2nd hand dresses until now). I got recommended for the shop 'Loliloli shop for Lolita Princess' on ali and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them and whether they're replica dresses or not.

I really don't want to buy any replicas if I can help it. Thanks you in advance.

Buying anything from Ali is going to likely be replicas. Don’t be so cheap.

just buy brand or 2nd hand brand anon. seriously, every taobao thing I have seen/received has been shit compared to my brand, and I wouldn't suggest spending money on something like that personally.

Ugh. Where are the new newbies even getting info from? This has to be the worst thing anyone ever recommended to you.

Aliexpress is the amazon seller of China. There's no actual lolita shops on there, only middlemen flipping stock from the real taobao shops. So everything you can buy from there is either overpriced original that would be cheaper off their taobao storefront, or a shitty replica. And since lolitas don't shop for dresses off Aliexpress, therefore the majority of "lolita" stuff on there are geared towards people looking for the cheapest junk costumes, not actual lolita clothes.

If you're really clueless with ordering from taobao (I mean, the taobao thread exists), then go with a known, reliable reseller such as Glitzy in Wonderland, my-lolita-wardrobe, clobba.

Additionally, get your info from elsewhere. Rufflechat (on facebook) or r/lolita (on reddit) has actual, real lolitas who can answer your questions and give you better recommendations than bloody Aliexpress.

Yeah I never said price was a problem. I just don't want to spend 300-400 on 2nd hand dresses that I'm not sure whether will fit my style of what I'm going for. But thanks I guess.

Thank you for the help. I'm honestly only wanting to try cheaper dresses (if that's an option) rather than spend big bucks on dresses that I might not like or suit me.

I haven't tried Taobao yet (mostly because I've never used the site) but I'll make sure to stick to Lacemarket from now on. Thanks again. I'll steer clear from Ali.

Dude, you can get cheap brand 2nd hand... I've gotten brand dresses that are practically new for 40 dollars. Go look at lace market and look around. Best to buy 2nd hand brand even if you're not sure because trust me.. when you're getting into lolita, it's pretty disheartening to have all these great lofty expectations of how pretty and cute you'll look and feel then end up regretting it because you got a shit dress. Just find a nice, cheap 2nd hand brand dress and go from there. I made the mistake of starting with In the Starlight, which was a western indie brand, then bodyline, then felt really meh about spending money on shit. once I got my first actual brand piece, I never looked elsewhere.

Like >>9927142 said, you won't get a good impression of the fashion by buying cheap shit. I recall anecdotes of girls complaining that lolita isn't what they expected and that it's "a cheap costume", when in reality they wasted money on the cheapest shit they could buy and expected luxurious quality.
Don't be like that, anon. Definitely go for secondhand brand, this way if you buy something that doesn't suit you, you can at least be sure you'll be able to sell it to someone else. Brand usually retains its value so it's easy to sell secondhand, as long as it's in good condition; cheap Aliexpress crap does not.

anon $300 meme has been dead for a long time secondhand brand is incredibly cheap now unless youre looking for coveted pieces or new releases. literally got $30 brand jsks in nearly new condition many times save yourself the embarrassment you're going to hate the fashion if you start with cheap aliexpress and taobao garbage.

I just got my dream dress in the mail from a Japanese seller... the only problem is that it has a stain on it that the seller didn't disclose.
It's a black dress and the stain is grey. It's not very big, so I don't think anyone would notice that much, but this is the first dress I've gotten with a stain like that.
I've tried getting it out, but nothings working. Will people really notice it if it's just a light stain on a black dress? Is there anything I can do? I feel embarrassed to have a stained dress and don't know if I can wear it in fear that people will be like, "Ew, look at that stain! Disgusting!"
Please, someone reassure me.

if it won't come off maybe it's a bleach stain rather than residue? if you're 100% sure it's not a bleach stain I'd send to dry cleaners (if it's safe for the dress) and if it's still there just gently go over it with a black fabric marker to conceal.

Adjustable dressforms only come in a few sizes anyway. The Singer normal-sizes one is the same body shape in smaller and then larger, and the Dritz ones come in "tiny teenager" and "full figured" size.

FYI the other anon is right, if her waist is smaller than 25" this will be useless. But a waist smaller than 25" is a pretty small human being. Is she asian or very young?

>(you can try to sell it on but sometimes there’s just no buyers for that size

this is dead wrong btw, the fattychan market is the only part of the lolita secondary market that moves fast right now. i'm a borderline fatty but the bigger pieces i've had (haenuli, custom sized, F+F, BL 4x, etc) have sold at or above original price, within days.

Making these yourself takes literally five minutes. Cut out two circles, sew almost all the way around the circle, turn it inside out, iron, and then poof you're done. Wrap it around your bun and secure with an elastic.

Strait line in the middle I would say. Just make sure it's perfectly sewn and in the same colour as the lace.

Buttons afterwards, if you use it as closing and not just decorative, button holes before sewing the lace.

This means there will be someone. For the right price, there is always someone to do anything. You can buy murders, drugs, guns, anything illegal or shady, so why no seamstress? Go look for the best seamstress money can buy and you'll end well...

Or specify your question better so we can actually help you better than this.

Everyone else gave good answers, but I wanted to add that I have bought from that particular shop. First of all, most things there are not lolita, but if you must, it's a decent place to get things like tights, shoes, blouses. It's a good shop for casual fashion.

Also wanting to know where you got the recommendation from? Never take advice from that source.
