These look like cheap costume versions. Only reason >>9873801 looks a bit better is because of all the details. Any part that has solid fabric for more than a cm on screen you can see it's crap quality.

Like the hanfu tho. But those are just hanfu in the same style and similar colour as the drawing. Not literally copies/replica's. So I feel it's kinda cheating as she probably just bought similar hanfu in store.

>>9873801 <--- not a cheap costume version at all. This was a reproduction of that portrait and it ended up totaling something like 5k to make.

the other two are fugly and cheap.

For a costly reproduction it sucks. The bottom hem is completely different from the source, using a lace overlaying a white ruffle trimmed in gold when it’s supposed to be two overlayed ruffles, The top white, the bottom gold.

The fabric itself seems off, both in color and drape. In drape the repro looks over starched and crisp, whereas the original had a very full, bouncing body. In color, the painting looks very similar to Alexandra Nikolaevna’s cloth of silver dress, note its irridescence- it’s certainly not such a light white, if it’s white at all.

The lace on the sleeves looks stiff and white, maybe a tulle base, whereas the lace on the sleeves of the portrait looks to be am embroidery based, off white color with a very soft drape and pleat.

Also almost all the bows are too long and the wrong shape- having the pointy look of Christmas bows as opposed to the very soft rounded bows the original dress had.

Come on, son, this is amateur hour. Feel bad for the poor sucker who got stuck with the bill.

These >>9873800 >>9873801 were made for an Japanese exhibition by a costume company. The second gown is fne. First one suffers from flash + the material but is true to the gown it was based on.

>>9874532
The wrong image was used for the second gown. It's based on this dress, so it's fine detail-wise.

>>9873802 was made by students/interns working at a relatively small museum for a special exhibition.

Idk man, that is definitely the same dress from the other painting and the inaccuracies still really stand out for something that’s supposed to be an expensive reconstruction.

Again, look at the hem, is there cheap lace?

Look how the dress in the photo is just stark white compared to the one in the painting one which is a lot more reflective.

Even if it was a Japanese costume company, it was still a bad one.

Historical costumers are amazing. The chick who did the white version of that day dress once made an 18th century corset using period accurate needles.

It’s totally not for me but their work and passion is amazing.

So I don’t clog up the thread, here’s a reproduction of Worth’s Ironworks dress that you can see here: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/84652 I am so sorry I can’t splice the images together with their references.

This year the Costume College theme will be royalty so keep an eye out, I’m dying to see what these guys will come up with. I’d love to see Romanov recreations.

For someone who was just going on about accuracy, I have to say I have a weakness for Takarazuka’s Elisabeth costumes.

More redesigns than reproduction, their use of textures and fabrics just do such a great job at conveying the over the top opulence of the Romanov dynasty.

The outright costumey costumes also, I think, outdoes the original Austrian. They really have a much, much stronger sense of the character’s individual personalities, and they track Sissi’s transformation and character growth far more than the rather generic Austrian ones.

yeah i think 90% of what makes those look cheap is the photography. You're gonna drop 5k on a gown repro and post a pic using a camera phone with flash on?

I love all the Empress Elisabeth inspired dresses. This is the one from Classical Puppets. It's especially funny since they made the dress after the musical about the life of Empress Elisabeth, so it's a dress inspired by a dress inspired by the original.
