It's that time of year again, NC folks. Who's going? Waiting til Supercon instead?

>> No.9867944

Sad to say I’m not attending this year for the first time in a long time.

I used to love it so much but it’s just going downhill. The educational bullshit is boring and bringing down the con. All the good cosplayers are choosing other cons instead (like Momo)

And the masq last year was really the last straw for me. My group was performing and they treated us like total crap. Kept changing plans very last minute, and then the guy in charge just told us something along the lines of “welcome to show biz!”

Which is a bullshit excuse for being unorganized and unprofessional. I’ve been doing live theater for almost 20 years, that’s absolutely not how it’s supposed to work. An apology would have been much better but we got none. And the wedding thing during the middle of the masq? that was so boring and weird

With the masq previously being one of my fav parts of the con, I see no reason to continue attending.

Well for starters

I’ve been going for a long time and never even realized that was their schtick until recent years

so obv, it’s gone from subtle to in-your-face

It’s one thing to have a mixture of educational programming within your schedule (which is nice and done at most cons) and a whole other thing to basically force feed it by putting it into big events.

Bro it's on their website and has been for years. What other cons have you been to that have had samurai actors, kimono workshops, and traditional Japanese musicians? Hell they don't even allow non-Japanese panels. It's how we got spared the Homestuck, Steven Universe, etc "Ask a Character" hells.

If anything they've gotten more relaxed because now because there's a formal dance and a maid cafe.

I'm going and I'm super pumped. I've been going for about 15 years. To be honest both me and my friend both aren't going for the first time in a long time. That's partially our problem because we dipped into our con fund to see another event last month but a big part of it was the $70 ticket + hotel + travel wasn't worth what AZ was providing this year. No musical guest, very few guests, some random cosplayer with no talent (see pic related), and FOOD VENDORS.

Yeah I'm pretty salty over them making a big announcement to announce... food vendors. One of which is already in the convention center, one is a pop-up for events that just sells snowcones, Kanki's is usually there now, and pizza?? That wasn't worth making an announcement for, much less hyping up. The only interesting one is the Chinese dumpling food truck.

A lot of my friends are going to Momo. I'm just asking people but about 5 people that I have seen for 4 years aren't going. 2 I know are going to momo.

My main con partner is asking if I want to go to momo but Idk if I want to commit to a big ATL trip this late. I go to DragonCon ever year so...

Supercon has no interest for me. Not that into capeshit and i don't pay to meet people at all. Not sure really.

>> No.9878418

I'll be going with a large group of friends for the fifth year in a row. At this point, I attend very few panels and typically just use it as an excuse to meet up with a lot of guys from out of state or around the state who otherwise couldn't hang out. Here's hoping the con offers something interesting besides an excuse for us all to hang out.

>> No.9878498

They've been around since 2005??

>> No.9878610

Meh, I go to several conventions in Atlanta, and while fun, they have their cons too. Everything is more expensive - hotel, parking, etc. There's an aspect of bigger that is fun, but at the same time, it's harder to get into any events you want to, and depending on the con security can be stricter in areas.

My friends and I didn't experience any of the "weirdness" that I keep hearing mentioned online about last year so we are all going again. I appreciate that parking in Raleigh is cheap, my hotel room has a kitchen, and I can expect to get into almost any event I want to while anticipating the dance to be the worst line of the weekend for me (I get my badge early Friday when there is no line).

I'm bored by most panels nowadays, even at the bigger cons, and guests aren't my thing at all. I just want to cosplay and hang out with friends, so I expect to have a fantastic Animazement.

1. I think a lot of people who push con content with panels are pissy for years about the inability to get panels going. Lots of the time is eaten up my Japanese language and culture panels like.. "do you want to teach english in Japan" kind of stuff that has nothing to do with anime.

It's more like a college job fair for japanese culture than a fun and engaging con. So yeah, those people get salty. but those are the people who fill your con with content and get people excited.

2. Growing competition from bigger cons, namely Momo and Supercon. Momo being on the same weekend for two straight years now, and about 5 hours away, but in a much larger city with much bigger guests. Momo is going to be more fun for just about anybody. It's also backed by the people that bring you Dragoncon and has a pretty big fashion and video game aspect. Supercon is in Raleigh but a few weeks away and appeals to the older crowd of Marvel comics fan and general pop culture people who just want to throw money away on autographs. AZ has very niche and small name guests.

3. Cosplayers go where the crowd is and if it feels like a lot people are jumping ship, the bigger name cosplayers will go to other cons because cosplay is all about getting attention haha.

AZ is definitely a younger convention despite the Japanese culture stuff. And that's why it gets ignored and feels like a waste of time. The staff refuse to change their core.. maybe because they get grants and things, and people are just bored with AZ.

That's what they do. They're an educational organization. You don't go to AZ expecting Western comic book creators or five panels for Homestuck.

>The panels suck!
This one I can kinda understand but at the same time, host a panel? You can't even use the "They don't comp for it!!" excuse because they do. I did one panel the other year and got a discount for two badges for the next year. It's worth it to host a panel.

I've been attending since the early 2000s. The con changed the most the first year it was at the convention center. The drunken crazy party nights with guys like the saki ninjas running around were over. In the past 5 years the con has begun to focus on more educational sides of Japanese culture. It's still a anime con, but you might learn a thing or two while you have fun. Last year was the first year of supercon happening, so a lot of people held off on AZ last year to try supercon. Supercon was crowded and expensive, I think we will have more people ignore supercon this year. Momo con is too far away if you live in the area to make the difference worth it. Also, the arcade was open all night last year, it was fucking awesome being wasted playing some Gundam arcade game at 3 am.

I have a Kaban outfit I will be retiring after this AZ. I was the only Kemono Friends cosplay last year, I expect the same this year sadly. Any Kemono Friends cosplayers out there?

I mean the problem is the emphasis is more on the Japanese aspect of the con. History and Culture of Japan. However most of the attendees yearn for the stuff they see at other Anime conventions out west or even ones like at Boston or D.C.

But the whole setup has always been about the things outside of anime which is why most people tend to skip this one and go to momocon. Which is more in tune with what you can find at Anime Expo and such.

Really Animazement functions as a random local anime con specifically for the residents there.

someone liking you and your work enough to ask for an autograph or picture is an honor, every single panel I've ever been to with a VA at animazement when they get asked what the best part of the job is they all say going to conventions and meeting fans
the moment you start charging money for that stuff is the moment when you've started liking the taste of your own shit far too much, anyone who does it is scum
I mean you've got watanabe who's the actual creator of some of the most influential anime of all time happily signing autographs for everyone, or some of the english VAs sitting for hours signing hundreds of people's things and having a nice conversation with all them on top of it

The problem with Animazement is the problem with most Anime cons these days. People are expecting there to be a mixed style with a hint of anime like they see at Comic Con or Anime Expo.

For some the non-anime stuff has taking over the anime portion of the anime con while some other cons are trying to stay the course and remain pure and primarily anime but even for them some of the non-anime stuff still seeps in but nevertheless. Pure Anime conventions are gonna be endangered soon enough. As more and more people demand more variety.

That and the only ones that can really survive this model are ones that are located in high population centers in urban areas mainly places like Boston, NYC, Chicago and such.

>> No.9894120

>>9894107
I disagree. In the "old days" of Animazement when it was at the Sheraton, I remember LOTS of panels that would be "off topic" by today's standards and they really helped to foster the growth of the con. Lots of steampunk material, lots of Star Wars and science fiction material that had costume/cosplay relevance but the panel content was quite diverse. It only seems like it's been in the past 8-10 years that they stripped that content and replaced it with educational Japan content, which is usually enjoyable but I can see where it would turn a lot of people off both from a topic standpoint and a diversity standpoint. If anything, I think Animazement needs to get itself out of the pigeonhole it's locked itself in and branch back out. They still need quality control to make sure capeshit doesn't take over but I think a little bit more diversity is definitely in order.

>> No.9894296

i certainly enjoyed it i guess because i dont have much to be disappointed yet. though i mostly spent time playing gundam vs in the video game room or attended panels like the gunpla building session.

The lower attendance this year brought back memories of the Sheraton hotel, more homely feel. That was one of the few upsides though, the panel quantity was lacking, quality was great if you picked the right panels. I went to a panel about Japan and Cat girls/Animal-humans and it was a dude (doing a good job and a well researched effort, so no hate) basically giving a college level presentation on the true history of where animal-human hybrid art and lore came from. I bailed and went next door to a 90's anime nostalgia panel, which probably had the majority of the 30+ yr olds at the con in one room based on the showing of hands (including myself). The cosplay quality had a noticeable lower average, I think all the out of state heavy hitters went to Momo-con. This sucks because anyone south of the South Carolina boarder will choose Momo-con as a first choice, and AZ as a alternate. The Dealers Room sucked ass, only a few dealers had any goods worth shit. Mostly bulk ordered (by the pound) amazon anime goods, so multiple tables were selling the same items. I still had fun, regardless of the con itself. Also, not having the arcade machines at the Marriott and open 24hrs like last year sucked.

I kept the loot to a minimal, but pic related. Grabbed the Gunpla right before the Gunpla panel (managed amazon price on the kit). The Boomslank t-shirts are fucking expensive but worth it, super high quality art and shirts. Ones I have from before only fade some after 2 years, still wearable. Last I got a Cowboy Bebop Japanese market artbook signed by Shinichirō Watanabe.

capeshit is huge. People who like shit have money because they are in stable jobs, unlike anime fans. I'd say comic fans range from late 20's to early 40's and Anime fans are low teens to mid 20's. One has a lot of cash to blow and one doesn't. generally.

I had fun. Only paid for one day. Hung out at the bar friday night, hung out in the bar and main entrance most of saturday and paid for sunday to walk around and take pics. Not a lot of good cosplay, but I stayed high and just caught up with friends.

The only problem is that AZ isn't really a party con like Ichi because of the hotel layout and convention center rules. So it doesn't even really excel at what it could be good for.

I think they should move to a smaller venue and make it a party con. But they never will.
