The first few times I saw Anime Hell, before I started noticing some repeated content. Same for Totally Lame Anime.
The cultural/history panels from Charles Dunbar are really good.
Every single japanese voice actor panel, double if they were in in IM@S, those are a riot.
The KARASU action stage shows from the last two years have been fantastic.

Delta Hotel have a couple of open areas with tables and very few people hanging about. You'd have to play your game carefully though, preferably post 8pm. It's not like all of Delta is under the control of AN. Just wear civie clothing and not have your badge with you. For all staff care, you paid for your hotel rooms (I have for Delta under a friend), you should have the right to use the "public facilities" of the ground floor.

Back area past the swimming pool where you see escalators to go to second floor area. That specific ground floor is pretty big area, I think it's perfect place to do an unofficial panel. We simply have to make sure we're not too loud, not make a mess, and I think it should be fine.

You got the main chad in the meetup who I couldn't understand what the heck he and the people surrounding him was talking about. So I'm like fuck it and coincidentally I saw another guy who was like, "I don't understand what the fuck I'm doing in this meetup." Then either he or myself started with a small topic like "hey nice cosplay man, is that from [insert series/game here]?" and the convo grew and another guy who had no interest in the chad's convo joined in our "sub/branched off group".

You get the idea. I think most, if not majority care less about appearance and more on the lines of "are you fun to be around with", or "are you a chill/nice guy to be around with" type of situation.

If you're going to be body positive and call out AP for not being inclusive with body-sizes, why do you photoshop your body and face thinner in all of the photos you post online? (Don't lie about this, we have all seen you in real life and you lied about your MRC size)

Don't get me wrong. I'm insecure about my size too. It's 2018 and I don't think people care if you shop yourself slimmer. I'm not calling out the fact that you shop. However, shopping yourself skinnier is indirectly acknowledging that you think skinny people are more beautiful, that you do not feel beautiful at your size. There are plenty of people in the comm who are plus-sized, gorgeous, and don't shop themselves 8 sizes smaller, like Cadney, JLH, JM. These people are genuinely supportive of being inclusive and feel beautiful despite being plus-sized.

constantly shopping yourself thinner (and probably lying about your measurements) is just literally making a point that you think being skinnier is more beautiful. That's why you sound salty as hell, and this whole "AP blah blah skinny girls only" is just a way for you to externalize the problem so you don't feel like shit.

I wish I was skinnier too. I acknowledge that AP's "poster girl" and brand image is a petite, cute girl.

I didn't lie about my MRC size, I'm honestly tired of the way things get twisted on /cgl/. I thought it was a medium due to buying it off a smaller girl in the comm, I was corrected, and I acknowledged it.

I use beauty+ filters and angles on my photos, and sometimes edit my cheeks to be smaller, and I've never pretended like I don't. I'm not "acknowledging that I think skinny people are more beautiful". If I post a photo of myself and people all over cgl insult me for being fat, having a big forehead, etc. it's going to make me not want to show that in photos. I had a discussion with Fanny about this a while back, it's crazy to expect someone who goes through years of being nitpicked by people on the internet to not edit their photos to avoid that stuff.

I think all 3 of those people you mentioned are beautiful IRL and in photos, but it's silly to say they don't use beauty tricks in their pictures or feel self conscious about their body. I know one of them almost never posts any public photos of her coords because of fear of backlash, so please don't pretend I'm an outlier with my editing.

I realize I sound salty, but like I said, I never expected to be chosen and I'm disappointed compared to last year's model choices. I'm sad for my friends (like Cadney) who are very devoted to AP but were glossed over for their waist sizes/height. Also it makes me sad that someone I'm friends with (on facebook at least) would say this stuff anonymously about me but wouldn't open discussion with me directly. I converse with different kind of people at my workplace. Some are slightly weird and some act kinda autistic. But regardless I do my best to be friendly to everyone because I know some people may feel the same way towards me for things I'm not overly aware of myself. I'm not in any way "salty". I think you got the wrong idea of what I tried explaining. I didn't really understand what the Chad's conversation was about. There's no point to be in a conversation if you're clueless about the topic or know very little about. For example, I enjoy fantasy anime but I know very little about akiba maids and idols. If the Chad's topic is about maids and idols then it is out of my scope of knowledge.

Hence why I created my own small convo group with someone else and another person joined eventually. It is a matter of having the courage to look for people to talk with and having a relatable conversation. 30 mins to one hour into the CGL meetup, everyone in the meetup eventually went into their own respective small convo groups. It's not like majority of people concentrated on the Chad only. It's also a matter of having eye contact with the person who's talking, so even if the wheelchair guy is looking upwards, I would tilt my head down when I speak to him. This is also a solution, is it?

There are hundreds of departments you have to contend with, staging, catering, AV, security, head of your department ect. If one of these people hates you or power trips you are screwed for your event going smoothly. Then you have the added bonus of these departments being overworked and all on volunteer hours so there may also be a chance they just plain forgot or got the info wrong. There a lack of accountability and since it all volunteers incompetency can stay on staff for years.

Panelist here. Theres a seperate website for signing up/starting panels. So the choices are based on whatever people actually sign up for and how many panelists sign up.


Like the one year we had like 20 different "gays in anime" panels and climate change panel. It was because there was literally no other options other than leaving a bunch of empty rooms. I do the unpopular opinions panel, and it usually turns into a "bitch about the con" panel at the end, and we told everyone about how to sign up and a lot seemed interested, so maybe word spread around?

I also noticed that they combined a few panels together this year so that would leave more room for less popular panels to have a spot.

I just ended up buying a hotel room at the Holiday Inn near the Toronto Congress Centre, and yeah, it was a bit over $500 for 2 days.
Not exactly the kind of pricing you'd expect from Holiday Inn. (Though since I don't spend much time in the room, pretty much all chain hotels are good enough to not make any issues.)

Honestly, I paid only a tiny bit more for 3 nights at the fucking Ritz-Carlton during Fan Expo. I think the booking company made a mistake and just honoured it.
The cleaning staff comes into the hotel and clean twice daily instead of once by the way, not sure why that's important, honestly half the time I just put up the "do not disturb" sign on the door handle. I guess you have a housecoat that you can wear after showering which is nice.
Because they have a habit of identifying customers before they check in using cameras, I purposely entered in such a way that no one would know me off the bat.
I also didn't leave too much info around so the staff would set the radio to a preferred music genre of mine. They chose jazz once, which out of the radio offerings, is reasonable but not preferable.

Otherwise good luck on your search, you'll have a tough time with it at such a last-minute.
My first time going to AN we stayed in a makeshift hotel next to chinatown, and the commute was almost an hour (part subway, mostly bus to the airport) which wasn't bad. You just have to manage the possessions you buy, since it's very hard to justify more than one round trip each day, so whatever you buy you've gotta carry all day. So downtown's probably your best bet.

if it's a series gathering, I usually stick with canon character poses or try to think of things relatively in character? Go with the flow. You're pretty much expected to stay still for the whole time you're up though so I wouldn't sweat it.

Worst cringe panel was Toxicity in Fandom though where three white people were like "we used to be racist but now we're not" bullshit. I'm generally okay with these panels but man was that bad, then troll asshole showed up and got booted. No big loss though, the panel was a waste

Best panel was the Gundam Debate panel! I won a poster for shitting on Lacus Clyne so I'm ok with that. It was actually pretty well set up for a first time thing and I'm so glad mecha is making a big comeback. The mecha/gunpla area was really big too.
