Whatever happened with this show? Was it any good? Is it coming back? I remember Heroes of Cosplay getting a lot of flak, but heard nothing about this one

There were only 5 episodes, most of the contestants are assholes, and the winner of the first episode cheated on and abused his wife for over a year. This show is garbage just like Housewives of Cosplay

There was a huge shit fit Syfy had to deal with from a photographer after Heroes of Cosplay so they were probably trying to avoid all possible issues like that.

Problem is the format really doesn't reflect actual cosplay which is about tying to being a well known character and design to life. Only a really small portion of us bother with OCs and even then theyre usually planned out and meaningful in some way. The way they did it by throwing in curveballs that forced contestants to change their design arbitrarily was just stupid.

To fix it they would have to do the following:
>Give theme to contestants ahead of time and have them provide what characters they would want to make on the show
>Go down the lists and get approval from the properties to use the characters and inform contestants what they can use
>Have the show go in rounds of props, costume etc but the twist is certain materials get taken away and the contestants are forced to make the samr thing, but with a differebt twchnique or material. Cutthroat Kitchen style

This would reflect actual cosplay and the challenges we face much better.

The show tried to focus more on crafting but missed the mark in favor of lame OCs. Heroes of Cosplay was a mess from day 1 because it was originally supposed to focus just on Yaya Han and was called 'Yaya's World' during development then it was renamed 'Cosworld' then 'Heroes of Cosplay'

Just taking everything at face value and not considering drama outside of the show, Cosplay Melee was boring as fuck.
I know Heroes of Cosplay got a lot of shit, but it was entertaining. Wish they would do something similar to it. Or maybe taking a more face off approach to it. CM was way to simple and bland.

You'd think cosplayers would be good at creating interesting and compelling character designs, but as it turns out most of us are terrible. Then again, the sheer popularity of terrible and unmotivated "warrior disney princess" AUs should have tipped us off to that.

The show format doesn't really promote better character design for the contestants because they have to throw them curves balls because reality show. They have to make a character design based on a prop in the first round and then have some twist thrown in the second round. Though some people were clueless like the girl who designed an elf during Game of Thrones week and then didmt back off on making a blonde elf when the round 2 twist was she now had to be House Baratheon. Even though its a plot point that all Baratheons have black hair and theres no elves in GoT for fucks sake.

OP pissed me off the most though because it was weird gunmetal, weathered armor over a prom dress, neither of which are really "magical girl" but she won anyway.

the best was the photographer who sued syfy, had nothing to do with the photos and was doing so on behalf of another photographer. Then he said he won the lawsuit and didn't give any money to the OG photographer.

I wish we could have a show like RPDR with 8-10 different cosplayers each season with different challenges and someone gets sent home each week until there is a winner. I'd watch it just to see the drama in the workroom unfold.

I guess I'll give some sort of props to the first girl that came out about this (one of the girls mentioned in this post, I believe), because that takes some amount of bravery, but this is just a long post that was made because Emma was mad she got fucking PLAYED.

A friend of mine got to the interview stage for this show and they had you submit your designs before they even flew you out. They grouped together enough similar designs and then decided the theme of the show from that. Homegirl should have adapted, but it wasn't all her fault either when the show had already approved her elf design.

Yeah, all they had to do was strike a balance between the two shows. Heroes of Cosplay was garbage though because it wasn't even about crafting and was literally about everyone being a bitch to one another like every other reality show

Yeah, but SFX is a field which heavily relies on original designs. Cosplayers are basically only trained in recreating what we see, most of us putting no effort into actually understanding and analyzing designs, learning what makes them interesting and what makes them work. Most cosplayers, when asked why they like a costume design, will give you an answer along the lines of "it looks cool!", MAYBE saying that it references/derivates from thing X, which they also like (because it looks cool).
